To describe the epidemiology and the associated mortality and serious neurological sequelae of bacterial meningitis in children under five years of age in Western Australia, and to consider the potential impact of a Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine on this group of children. ⋯ Any conjugate H. influenzae type b vaccine should be effective when administered to non-Aboriginal children in the first six months of life, but only the most immunogenic vaccines (for example, the vaccine known as PRP-OMP) are likely to be effective in Aboriginal infants.

To report a series of older patients who had been physically abused or neglected and to describe their disabilities and social situation, the abuser, interventions offered and outcomes. ⋯ The findings are similar to those of overseas studies. Awareness of the problem and early intervention with counseling, provision of appropriate services and accommodation are likely to be successful in limiting the impact of elder abuse.

To provide an overview of the goals and rationale for cancer management. ⋯ Cancer cure is no longer a myth but a reality. To overcome present barriers to the cure of some cancers, there is need for a better understanding of the biology of epithelial solid tumours including the mechanisms to overcome multiple drug resistance. The restoration of functional health after cure is attained is paramount. Quality of life as a measure of success should be included in all clinical trials.
