To assess whether Australian clinical trials activity in National Health Priority Areas (NHPAs) reflects the relative disease burden. ⋯ Australian clinical trial activity for obesity and dementia interventions is lower that would be expected based on their relative disease burden. Trial registries provide a valuable public database to identify and monitor gaps in research activity.

To assess the feasibility of linking a national clinical stroke registry with hospital admissions and emergency department data; and to determine factors associated with hospital readmission after stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA) in Australia. ⋯ Linking clinical registry data with routinely collected hospital data for stroke and TIA is feasible in Victoria. Using these linked data, we found that readmission to hospital is common in this patient group and is related to their comorbid conditions.

To describe the geographical mobility of general practitioners in Australia, both within rural areas and between rural and metropolitan areas. ⋯ GPs working in small communities and those in a rural location for less than 3 years are most at risk of leaving rural practice.

Gout is a common clinical problem encountered by both general and specialist clinicians. The key principles in gout management include establishing a definitive diagnosis, the swift treatment of acute attacks, and using urate-lowering therapies appropriately to prevent further attacks and joint damage. ⋯ Emerging diagnostic imaging techniques and novel therapies show promise in the diagnosis and treatment of gout. In most cases, using existing therapies judiciously remains the key determinant of success in managing gout.
