The Australian health care system contributes 7% of the national greenhouse gas emission footprint and generates massive waste streams annually. Operating rooms are a particular hotspot, generating at least 20% of the total hospital waste. A systematic search of several global academic databases was conducted in mid-2022 (articles from 1992 to 2022) for peer-reviewed research relevant to waste management in the operating rooms. ⋯ The third barrier was the immediate cost of implementing waste management compared with the long term realisation of environmental and economic benefits. The last barrier to implementing institutional practice change was the lack of policies and regulations at the local hospital, federal and international levels. We also evaluated the knowledge gaps in current surgical waste research, including lack of benchmarking data and standardised regulations concerning reusable or reprocessed devices, as well as the methods used to promote pro-sustainability behavioural change.

To assess changes following the 2013-21 Home Care Package (HCP) reforms in the rate of HCPs provided to Australians aged 65 years or older, the characteristics of people who have received HCPs, and the capacity of the program to meet demand for its services during 2018-21. ⋯ Despite the increased overall availability of HCPs, the supply of higher care level HCPs is still lower than the demand, probably contributing to suboptimal support for the ageing-in-place preferences of older Australians, especially in regional and remote areas.

To estimate the incidence of melanoma in Australia among people with ancestries associated with low, moderate, or high risk of melanoma, by sex and 5-year age group; to establish whether age-specific incidence rates by ancestry risk group have changed over time. ⋯ Melanoma incidence has declined in some younger age groups in Australia, including among people with high risk ancestry. Social and behavioural changes over the same period that lead to lower levels of ultraviolet radiation exposure probably contributed to these changes.
