To provide an overview of the goals and rationale for cancer management. ⋯ Cancer cure is no longer a myth but a reality. To overcome present barriers to the cure of some cancers, there is need for a better understanding of the biology of epithelial solid tumours including the mechanisms to overcome multiple drug resistance. The restoration of functional health after cure is attained is paramount. Quality of life as a measure of success should be included in all clinical trials.

How can epidemiology contribute to understanding the cause of clinical disease? We discuss the nature of causality and the intrinsic limitations of all empirical science, including epidemiology, in establishing "proof" of causality. Our examples relate to eye disease: How the cause of blindness from retrolental fibroplasia was unravelled. How the congenital rubella syndrome was discovered as a cause of congenital cataract. How allopurinol was cleared from suspicion as a cause of cataract.

Anaphylactoid reaction to intravenous hydrocortisone sodium succinate: a case report and literature review.
Reports of corticosteroid sensitivity reactions are rare in the medical literature. We report an anaphylactoid reaction to hydrocortisone sodium succinate given intravenously which occurred on two occasions during treatment of a patient for asthma. ⋯ No reactions occurred to dexamethasone sodium phosphate administered intravenously, prednisolone given orally or beclomethasone dipropionate by inhalation. Results of a radioallergosorbent test (RAST) were negative for hydrocortisone sodium succinate.
