Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study
Efficacy and safety of 10% HES 130/0.4 versus 10% HES 200/0.5 for plasma volume expansion in cardiac surgery patients.
Hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solutions are frequently used for perioperative volume replacement. Whereas older HES specimen tended to accumulate in the plasma and to cause negative effects on hemostasis, more recent products, e.g., HES 130/0.4, are characterised by improved pharmacological properties. The present study was designed to compare the efficacy and safety of 10% HES 130/0.4 and 10% HES 200/0.5. ⋯ Ten percent HES 130/0.4 was equally effective and safe as compared to 10% HES 200/0.5 for volume therapy in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery. Postoperative coagulation and renal function, as measured by standard laboratory tests, were similar among groups.

Regional versus IV analgesics in labor.
The aim of this study was to compare combined spinal epidural (CSE), epidural (E) and IV pethidine analgesia and their effects on the mother, fetus, newborn and the labor course. ⋯ Regional analgesia especially CSE using bupivacaine or lidocaine is a safe effective method for analgesia in labor with relative better efficacy of bupivacaine.

Is hyaluronate sodium effective in the management of knee osteoarthritis? A placebo-controlled double-blind study.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injection on pain and function in knee osteoarthritis (OA). ⋯ HA treatment was effective in the management of knee OA and improved knee pain and functional outcome, but there was no statistically significant difference in functional and symptom improvement with respect to saline (placebo) injection.

[Effect of treatment with a food supplement (containing: selected sea fish cartilage, vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid, zinc, copper) in women with iron deficiency: double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial].
The term iron deficiency is used to indicate a condition in which the content of iron (Fe) in the organism is low, even before the consequent reduction in erythropoiesis comes about. This clinical situation is very frequent in patients in fertile age. The therapy commonly used (Fe salts) is often poorly tolerated. The use of a food supplement containing nutrients useful for improving the bioavailability of Fe and that is well tolerated can represent a valid alternative to iron therapy. ⋯ This study has shown that, in patients with iron deficiency, the use of a food supplement, consisting of nutrients that improve the bioavailability of Fe, leads to a significant improvement in blood iron and blood ferritin levels.

[Study of the onset and progression of peripheral neuropathy and hypertension in NIDDM].
Diabetic neuropathy is the most common pathology affecting the peripheral nervous system. In prognostic terms, it is the most devastating complication of diabetes. About 50% of diabetics suffer from neuropathy between 25-30 years after the diagnosis of diabetes, even if over the past few decades there has been a considerable improvement in the diagnostic methods and criteria used to classify peripheral neuropathies, many of which are related to the development of neurophysiology. However, we still do not know enough about the incidence, prevalence and natural history of peripheral neuropathy diagnosed using clinical and electrophysiological criteria in non-insulin dependent diabetic patients. ⋯ These results show that 1) metabolic control and a complete neurophysiological examination are essential for preventing and identifying the onset and progress of neuromuscular damage; 2) the onset or deterioration of these two complications mainly had a less well known common cause which was less studied and described.
