Summary measures of health are essential in making estimates of health status that are comparable across time and place. They can be used for assessing the performance of health systems, informing effective policy making, and monitoring the progress of nations toward achievement of sustainable development goals. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2015 (GBD 2015) provides disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) and healthy life expectancy (HALE) as main summary measures of health. We assessed the trends of health status in Iran and 15 neighboring countries using these summary measures. ⋯ The levels and trends in causes of DALYs, life expectancy, and HALE generally show similarities between the 16 countries, although differences exist. The differences observed between countries can be attributed to a myriad of determinants, including social, cultural, ethnic, religious, political, economic, and environmental factors as well as the performance of the health system. Investigating the differences between countries can inform more effective health policy and resource allocation. Concerted efforts at national and regional levels are required to tackle the emerging burden of non-communicable diseases and injuries in Iran and its neighbors.

To assess the national health system for management of diabetes mellitus (DM) in Iran, with particular focus on diabetic retinopathy (DR). ⋯ The existence of national policies, programs, a qualified workforce, and modern technology is promising. Nevertheless, other aspects of the health system need to be improved to ensure access to health and eye care for people with DM and achieve universal health coverage.

Determinants of Lifestyle Behavior in Iranian Adults with Prediabetes: Applying the Theory of Planned Behavior.
Prediabetic condition can lead to development of type 2 diabetes, especially in individuals who do not adhere to a healthy lifestyle. The aim of the present study was to investigate the socio-cognitive factors using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) that may be associated with the choice of lifestyle in prediabetic patients. ⋯ The TPB may be a useful model to predict behaviors of physical activity and dietary choice among prediabetic people. Therefore, it may be used to monitor lifestyle modification to prevent development of diabetes among people with prediabetic conditions.

Recent data has proven that the WHO (world health organization) cut-off for obesity is not applicable to the Asian population. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of lean NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) in the capital of Iran and extract probable predictors for this growing health issue in this population. ⋯ The prevalence of NAFLD in lean subjects in a sample of Iranian population is 17.52%. Hypertriglyceridemia, higher SBP, and higher BMI especially over 23.2 are independent factors associated with the presence of NAFLD in lean subjects.

Recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in European populations have indicated that the rs12526453 polymorphism located in phosphatase and actin regulator 1 gene (PHACTR1), mapping to chromosome 6p24 and rs7865618 polymorphism in the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor B antisense RNA 1 gene (CDKN2B-AS1) on 9p21.3 are associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). This study was carried out to investigate the association of these polymorphisms and CHD in an Iranian population. ⋯ Due to the importance of chromosome 9p21 region and its relation with cardiovascular disease, the allelic pattern of its variation should be studied in different populations. The relation between this polymorphism and cardiovascular disease in the studied population confirms the importance of this region.
