There is a 3-fold higher prevalence of cardiovascular complications in patients with type 1 diabetes. The aim was to assess the relationship between subclinical atherosclerosis and visceral fat and fatty liver in diabetic adolescents. ⋯ In the present study, fatty liver and HbA1c were associated with subclinical atherosclerosis in lean adolescents with T1D.

The goals of successful bi-compartmental knee arthroplasty are to achieve correct fit and positioning of the implant, while appropriately correcting the mechanical alignment of the leg after surgery. As these requirements are not always reliably fulfilled using off-the-shelf implant systems, newer approaches for bi-compartmental resurfacing have been explored. ⋯ Custom-made bicompartmental knee arthroplasty can ensure optimized fitting and positioning of the implant with restoration of the leg axis. These implants could be considered as an alternative primary solution for knee surgeons treating bi-compartmental disease.

This study was conducted to compare the clinical effects of unilateral pedicle screw fixation and interbody fusion with PEEK cage (UPSFC) and standalone expandable fusion cage (SAEFC) on unilateral lumbar disc herniation. ⋯ Both SAEFC and UPSFC are effective techniques. UPSFC may be a better choice for patients with lumbar disc herniation and unilateral limb symptoms of nerve root in view of the advantages of better low back pain relief and low subsidence rate.

Imatinib mesylate is the drug of choice for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Imatinib pharmacokinetics is affected by a number of transport proteins and enzymes. ⋯ Despite the results of some other studies, no other polymorphism we analyzed was associated with imatinib plasma level or clinical response. The treatment outcomes cannot be predicted using the candidate gene approach and treatment decisions cannot be made according to the polymorphisms investigated in this study.
