Curcumin therapeutic applications are constrained by its prominent metabolic instability as well as inadequate absorption and bioavailability. The current study was designed to enhance the curcumin bioavailability by exploiting nanoparticles. ⋯ Although the two tested doses of nanoparticulate curcumin were much lower than free curcumin, both doses were effective in preventing HCC development while the low dose of free curcumin was hardly effective. Hence, we conclude that nanoparticles enhance the bioavailability of curcumin.

The inactivation of both alleles of the ATM gene leads to ataxia-telangiectasia syndrome, whereas carriers of monoallelic mutations in the ATM gene are associated with increased risk of different types of cancer. Three substitutions in the ATM gene (c.6095G>A, c.7630-2A>C, c.5932G>T) are the most common mutations causing ataxia-telangiectasia among Polish patients. The aim of this study was to determine whether these ATM mutations are associated with increased risk of tobacco-related cancers. ⋯ The results indicate that the studied ATM variants do not seem to be associated with tobacco-related cancers in Poland.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), a class of regulatory RNA molecules, are over 200 nucleotides long and could be used as a new potential biomarker, but their detection methods such as qRT-PCR are still not validated, and the influence of RNA degradation on lncRNA quantification is not clear. In this study, commercially available cDNA synthesis kits were tested and the influence of RNA degradation was compared. ⋯ cDNA synthesis kits with random hexamer primers preceded by polyA-tailing and adaptor-anchoring steps allows enhancement of lncRNA quantification specificity and sensitivity. In most cases degradation of RNA samples does not affect lncRNA quantification because these molecules have good stability.

The aim of the study was to estimate the overall survival of patients with EGFR mutation-positive non-small-cell lung cancer treated with erlotinib, gefitinib or afatinib. ⋯ Our real-world data regarding OS confirm the benefits found in clinical trials from the use of afatinib, erlotinib or gefitinib. However, the lower overall survival rate of Polish patients compared to similar studies from other research centres suggests the need for deeper investigation of this issue.

In this study, we aimed to distinguish differences in the procedural complication rate in a group of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) of the left main coronary artery (LMCA) between patients with isolated LMCA disease and multi-vessel disease (MVD) with LMCA involvement and to identify their predictors. ⋯ The MVD involvement in patients treated with PCI of the LMCA may play a protective role. Patients with isolated LMCA involvement undergoing PCI should be subjected to special care and protected by various methods, such as devices to support left ventricle function.
