The incidence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections in Poland is largely unknown. This study aimed to describe seroprevalence of markers of HEV infection among patients with immunodeficiency of diverse etiology and patients with advanced chronic liver diseases. ⋯ In this large cohort a high seroprevalence of anti-HEV-IgG was detected in comparison to other European countries, with the highest rates in patients with alcoholic liver disease and in transplant recipients.

Studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) are aberrantly expressed in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) ovaries and may have a role in PCOS development. In this study, the role and therapeutic implications of lncRNA H19 were investigated in PCOS ovaries and granulosa cells. ⋯ lncRNA H19 regulates the growth of ovarian granulosa cells and might prove to be a therapeutic target for management of PCOS.

With the implementation of the universal two-child policy, the number of pregnant women of advanced maternal age (AMA) will increase steadily. We aimed to investigate whether the effect of gestational weight gain on insulin resistance (IR) before delivery was mediated by serum adipokine concentrations in AMA. ⋯ Taken together, our findings suggest that the relationship between WG during the third trimester and IR was mediated by serum leptin concentrations in AMA, but not serum adiponectin concentrations.

Hypertension may cause target organ damage leading to hypertensive heart disease (HHD). The burden caused by HHD in Poland has not been studied systematically. The purpose of this study was to describe the burden of HHD in Poland in terms of prevalence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years lost (DALY) and key risk factors. ⋯ Our data suggest a need for national initiatives to improve the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, slow the progression of HHD, and reduce the related risks and premature deaths.

The aim of the study was to study a nanoliposomal anti-PCSK9 vaccine as a novel approach for cholesterol lowering via PCSK9 inhibition. ⋯ L-IFPTA+ vaccine can induce long-lasting, functional and safe PCSK9-specific antibodies in hypercholesterolemic C57BL/6 mice, providing a long-term protective impact on dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis.
