Pediatric intussusception is one of the most common causes of bowel obstruction in the pediatric population. Affected children have one section of the intestine sliding into the adjacent section. Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury (I/R) can occur during pediatric intussusception, and any delay in diagnosis or treatment can lead to loss of intestinal viability that requires bowel resection. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether transfer ribonucleic acid (tRNA)-derived fragments (tRFs) can serve as candidate biomarkers for pediatric intussusception. ⋯ Circulating tRF-Leu-TAA-006, tRF-Gln-TTG-033 and tRF-Lys-TTT-028 expression might be a novel potential biomarker for diagnosis of pediatric intussusception.

The prognosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is generally good in cases of high radiation sensitivity but poor in cases exhibiting radiation resistance; this resistance has been attributed to the presence of cancer stem cells. In recent years, CD98hc overexpression has been associated with poor prognosis in various types of cancers. CD98 is a heterodimer of heavy and light chains and is strongly involved in cell proliferation, survival, migration, and adhesion. We investigated whether CD98hc can be used as a cancer stem cell marker for HNSCC. ⋯ CD98hc-positive cells exhibited cancer stem cell-like properties in all cell lines. Thus, CD98hc is a potential marker of radiation sensitivity as well as a potential therapeutic target for improved survival rates of patients with HNSCC.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is associated with gastrointestinal haemorrhage (GIH), which may result from coagulopathy, systemic inflammation, reduced gastric perfusion, and arteriovenous malformation from non-pulsatile blood flow. Data are limited regarding the burden of this complication in the United States. ⋯ Gastrointestinal haemorrhage during ECMO hospitalisations occurred in small but significantly increasing proportions. The inpatient mortality rate and costs associated with GIH were substantial and increased significantly during the study period.

In addition to healthy lifestyle and balanced diet, nutraceutical supplementation may be useful to maintain overall metabolic wellness. The aim of the present study was to assess the metabolic and vascular effects of a new, highly standardized bergamot phytocomplex supplement in healthy volunteers with the features of metabolic syndrome. ⋯ The tested bergamot phytocomplex was able to significantly improve glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as inflammation, and might represent a novel multi-target approach to control metabolic syndrome.

This study aims to explore the effects of combination of laparoscopy and hysteroscopy in pregnancy outcome in women diagnosed with congenital uterine malformation (CUM). The observation criteria include pregnancy rate, misdiagnosis rate, rate of spontaneous abortion and preterm birth rate. ⋯ Uterine malformation surgery can significantly improve the reproductive prognosis in patients with CUM.
