Atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia are precursor lesions of gastric cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the usefulness of the biomarkers pepsinogen I(PgI), pepsinogen II (PgII), gastrin-17, and H. pylori antibodies in the identification of precursor lesions. ⋯ In the Western Mexican population, precursor lesions (AG, IM) are common in adults (45%) with dyspepsia but infrequent in children (8%). H. pylori infection was detected in 41.3% of adults and 16.0% of children. Of the studied biomarkers, a PgI/PgII ratio < 3 was an important risk factor for precursor lesions such as AG or IM in our population, with an OR of 9.171 (95% CI: 1.723-48.799, p = 0.009).

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have promising regenerative properties in tissue repair and anti-inflammatory responses. This study aimed to investigate the effects of MSCs and their combination with micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) in a croton oil-induced hemorrhoids model on tissue edema, inflammation, and underlying molecular mechanisms. ⋯ These findings suggest that MSCs play a crucial role in modulating TNF-α, TGF-β, collagen remodeling, and MMP-9 activity, highlighting their promising role in hemorrhoid treatment and wound healing processes. Further research is warranted to fully elucidate the intricate mechanisms and optimize MSC-based therapies for clinical applications in hemorrhoidal disease management.

This prospective study aimed to evaluate the functional status and risk factors in patients undergoing lung resection. ⋯ Lung functions dropped sharply after the surgery but improved over time.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two major medical conditions that constitute a significant financial burden on most healthcare systems. Due to AD sharing "insulin resistance" mechanistic features with DM, some scientists have proposed "type 3 DM" terminology for it. This study aims to compare the prophylactic effect of exercise and metformin on cognitive brain functions in rats with type 3 DM. ⋯ We can conclude that exercise can be as effective as metformin regarding prophylaxis against the deleterious effects of type 3 DM on cognitive brain functions.

NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) is implicated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) pathogenesis. Here, we explored the role of NLRP3 in cigarette smoke (CS)-induced airway inflammation in COPD. ⋯ NLRP3 expression is elevated in lungs and sera of COPD smokers. Inhibition of NLRP3 significantly attenuates CS-induced airway inflammation in mice via inactivation of multiple hub genes and their related inflammatory processes and signaling pathways.
