This study aimed to investigate the effect of tranexamic acid (TXA) with sequential routine anticoagulation on postoperative symptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA). ⋯ Increased BMI, low Fbg, and simultaneous bilateral TKA could act as risk factors for postoperative symptomatic VTE treated with TXA.

Although intrahospital transportation of critical patients from the emergency department (ED) is inevitable, it could also result in life-threatening situations. These situations, referred to as unwanted or unexpected events, mainly happen during the transportation of patients for diagnostic imaging or invasive procedures and result in a wide spectrum from vital condition changes, mental condition changes to cardiopulmonary arrest and death. Emergency departments have a high risk of facing such situations because these units are the first admission door of critical patients. ⋯ Intrahospital transportation of critical patients from the emergency room is a subject that should require attention by emergency room doctors, and using educated personnel, proper equipment, standardized protocols and control checklists will decrease the frequency of unwanted situations effectively.

No proven drug and no immunisation are yet available for COVID-19 disease. The SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), a key coronavirus enzyme, which is a potential drug target, has been successfully crystallised. There is evidence suggesting that statins exert anti-viral activity and may block the infectivity of enveloped viruses. The aim of this study was to assess whether statins are potential COVID-19 Mpro inhibitors, using a molecular docking study. ⋯ These results indicate, based upon the binding energy of pitavastatin, rosuvastatin, lovastatin, and fluvastatin, that statins could be efficient SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors. This is supported by the fact that the effects of some statins, especially pitavastatin, have a binding energy that is even greater than that of protease or polymerase inhibitors. However, further research is necessary to investigate their potential use as drugs for COVID-19.

Oxidative stress is the main cause of osteoarthritis (OA). Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) have antioxidant properties. Thus, the potential effect of LBP on H2O2-stimulated chondrocytes was examined. ⋯ LBP protected chondrocytes through inhibiting DNA damage and apoptosis caused by H2O2, in which the Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway played a positive role. It provided an inspiration for clinical application - developing LBP as a therapeutic agent and Nrf2 as a promising candidate.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic and progressive disease. Pharmacological treatment can only slow its progression. However, lung transplantation (LTx) is the only treatment for patients with its end-stage form. This study analysed the long-term results of the qualification process of patients with IPF recruited for LTx in a single centre. ⋯ The 6-minute walk test distance is an independent predictor of mortality on the lung transplant waiting list. Blood type and height also play a significant role in becoming a lung recipient.
