Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) inhibit human osteosarcoma growth and cause apoptosis. Previously, we reported that HDACIs induce autophagy via the FOXO1 pathway. Whether there is involvement of autophagy in anti-osteosarcoma activity of HDACIs is still unknown. ⋯ We found that inhibition of autophagy, either by autophagy inhibitors or ATG gene knockdown, markedly enhances TSA-caused cell death. Taken together, our studies reveal the function of autophagy in HDACI-caused osteosarcoma cell death and thus support the development of a novel therapeutic strategy by combining HDACIs and autophagy inhibitors in osteosarcoma treatment.

This study aimed to explore the bio-function of miR-210 in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia and provide new insights into the diagnosis and treatment of pre-eclampsia. ⋯ miR-210 can promote proliferation, migration, and invasion via downregulating PTPN2 in the PDGFR-Akt pathway.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has been associated with sperm damage. In view of the fact that quercetin possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, this compound may help to protect sperm against damage in DM. In this study, in-vivo effects of quercetin on sperm parameters in DM were investigated. ⋯ In-vivo administration of quercetin to diabetic rats helps to ameliorate sperm damage and improves sperm morphology and functions in DM.

Endocan and endoglin have been shown to play a role in angiogenesis. Aberrant excessive angiogenesis is a main factor in the development of diabetic nephropathy. In this study we evaluated endocan and endoglin levels in diabetes patients with and without albuminuria and compared them with healthy subjects. Therefore we aimed at gaining a better understanding of the role of angiogenesis in diabetic nephropathy and to assess the predictive role of endocan and endoglin as markers of diabetic nephropathy progression. ⋯ Endocan might be a more reliable marker of diabetic nephropathy development than endoglin.

Ethyl pyruvate (EP), a natural flavoring and fragrance agent, has been shown to exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. We tested the potential beneficial effects of EP in a rat model of acute necrotizing pancreatitis (ANP), a serious condition with a significant inflammatory explosion and oxidative stress. ⋯ The results from this experimental study indicate that EP, a nontoxic chemical approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a food additive, provides positive effects on the course of pancreatitis, suggesting potential usefulness in management of ANP.
