The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety in 4-year follow-up of Ex-PRESS P-200 mini-shunt implantation versus standard trabeculectomy. ⋯ Both procedures provided good control of IOP and decreased the number of postoperative medications. The advantage of the Ex-PRESS shunt is the better visual acuity, but its main limitation is the cost.

Sodium is the main cation in the extracellular space. In physiological conditions, sodium concentration in plasma is 135-145 mmol/l. The kidneys play the most important role in the regulation of sodium homeostasis. ⋯ Treatment of hyponatremia depends on the degree and duration (acute or chronic) of hyponatremia as well as presence of clinical symptoms. Too rapid correction of hyponatremia might result in a potentially fatal osmotic demyelinating syndrome. In the present review paper, pathophysiology and management of hyponatremia in patients with arterial hypertension are discussed.

Determination of liver iron concentration by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is becoming the new technique of choice for the diagnosis of iron overload in hereditary haemochromatosis and other liver iron surcharge diseases. Determination of hepatic iron concentration obtained by liver biopsy has been the gold standard for years. The development of MRI techniques, via signal intensity ratio methods or relaxometry, has provided a non-invasive and more accurate approach to the diagnosis of liver iron overload. This article reviews the available MRI methods for the determination of liver iron concentration and also evaluates the technique for the diagnosis and quantification of iron overload in different clinical practice scenarios.

The aim was to observe the effect of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) deficiency on clinical severity and expression of Th1/Th2/Th17-associated cytokines in experimental autoimmune neuritis (EAN). ⋯ Based on these findings, TLR4 may contribute to the pathogenesis of EAN by regulating Th17 cells and the production of Th17-associated factors. However, the exact mechanism remains unclear and more evidence is needed to elucidate its role in EAN.

To determine the impact of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MTHFR and MTRR genes on disease activity and the presence of MTX therapy adverse events in Polish children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). ⋯ MTHFR rs1801133 and MTRR rs1801394 polymorphisms are associated with higher disease activity at the moment of JIA diagnosis.
