Diabetes and osteoporosis are common metabolic diseases. Abnormal high glucose can lead to the apoptosis of osteoblasts. Autophagy is a highly conserved cellular process that degrades proteins or organelles. In the present study, we comparatively analyzed the effects of high glucose and glucose fluctuation on apoptosis and autophagy of MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. ⋯ High glucose, especially high glucose fluctuation, inhibits proliferation and promotes apoptosis and autophagy of MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. This may occur through inducing oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage in the osteoblasts.

To examine the burden of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at the global, regional, and national levels in terms of sex, age, geographic distribution, and the Socio-demographic Index (SDI). ⋯ Increasing trends in the age-standardized RA incidence and DALYs worldwide were shown. Future strategies for RA prevention should focus on women and older adults, as well as individuals from Andean Latin America, southern Latin America, central Asia, western sub-Saharan Africa, and other high-risk regions.

This study aimed to investigate the potential role of moxibustion (MOX) in the treatment of lung infection in patients bed-ridden due to osteoporotic fracture of the spine. ⋯ Moxibustion significantly alleviated the inflammatory responses, thus leading to a better survival rate of patients bed-ridden due to osteoporotic fracture of the spine.

The work was designed to investigate the effect of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on hypertension in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ CPAP has a significant antihypertensive effect on OSAHS patients, especially nocturnal hypertension, possibly by counteracting inflammation and oxidative stress.

Trehalose is a naturally occurring disaccharide of 2 glucose molecules, which has been suggested as a potential therapeutic agent to reduce blood glucose and ameliorate diabetes-related complications in type 2 diabetes (T2D). This study aimed to determine the efficacy of medium-term trehalose treatment in patients with T2D. ⋯ 12 weeks of treatment with 3.3 g/day of oral trehalose significantly improves CRP as a marker of inflammation, with potential favourable effects on quality of life, depression, and stress levels, but overall glycaemic control and pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance were unaltered during this time frame.
