The study was aimed at establishing an effective molecular-genetic method for detecting polymorphisms in genes CYP2C9 and VKORC1, which affect the pharmacogenetics of warfarin, and at determining their prevalence in Slovak population. ⋯ Slovak population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium and frequencies of SNPs were in accordance with other published results in European populations (Tab. 5. Fig. 3, Ref. 51).

Evaluation of intraabdominal adhesion generating potentials of ankaferd and calcium alginate used as hemostatic agents.
The present study aimed to evaluate intra-abdominal adhesion generating potential of Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS), which was used as postoperative hemostatic agent in the rats that underwent surgery, in comparison with Ca-alginate. ⋯ In conclusion, intra-abdominal adhesion generating potentials of Ca-alginate and ABS were experimentally evaluated and macroscopic and microscopic comparisons revealed no significant difference between sham, control, Ca-alginate, and ABS groups (Fig. 8, Ref. 36). Merkel cell carcinoma is a highly aggressive neuroendocrine skin tumor. This type of tumor is primarily based on Merkel cells located in the basal layer of the epidermis. ⋯ The therapy is radical surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy to the site of the primary tumor and regional lymph nodes. The authors describe a case report of Merkel cell carcinoma of the skin treated with somatostatin analogue and mTOR inhibitor exhausted after primary surgery and adjuvant radiotherapy and paliative chemotherapy (Fig. 2, Ref. 17).

Evidence suggests that paeoniflorin may be involved in anticancer activities. Here, we have investigated the effects of paeoniflorin and correlative mechanisms on anti-invasion and anti-metastasis in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines. ⋯ Paeoniflorin is effective anti-metastatic and anti-invasive agent for suppressing HCC invasion and metastasis (Fig. 5, Ref. 30).

Soybean (Glycine max), mistletoe (Viscum album) and red clover (Trifolium pratence) have been argued to have anti-cancer effects. In the present study it was aimed to investigate possible effects of these plant extracts on the activities of DNA turn-over enzymes, namely adenosine deaminase (ADA) and xanthine oxidase (XO) in cancerous and non-cancerous gastric and colon tissues. ⋯ Our results suggest that aqueous soybean, mistletoe and red clover extracts may exhibit anti-tumoral activity by depleting hypoxanthine concentration in the cancer cells through XO activation, which may lead to lowered salvage pathway activity necessary for the cancer cells to proliferate in the cancerous colon tissue. Some foods like soybean, mistletoe and red clover may provide nutritional support to medical cancer therapy through inhibiting and/or activating key enzymes in cancer metabolism (Tab. 4, Ref. 33).
