The usefulness of echocardiographic characteristics for dementia prediction in patients with heart failure decompensation (HFD) is not determined. Therefore, we sought to investigate the echocardiographic features of patients with HFD and screening diagnosis of dementia (SDD). ⋯ Apart from age, RWT reflecting left ventricular geometry changes but not hypertrophy was independently but moderately associated with SDD in patients following HFD (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 35).

The association of autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been studied for over 60 years, yet their causal relationship has not been elucidated. Most published papers report a better prognosis of the patients with tumour in the field of thyroiditis. In our work we aimed to find out the differences in the clinical behaviour of PTC depending on the presence of autoimmune inflammation. ⋯ AIT alone does not have a protective effect on the course of PTC, the cause of a better prognosis in the AIT1 subgroup is a different pathomechanism of carcinogenesis, as well as previous endocrinological monitoring and earlier detection of malignancy (Tab. 4, Fig. 2, Ref. 27).

The result of a kidney transplantation may be affected by certain congenital or acquired urological diseases that need to be addressed before, during or after the kidney transplant. Complications accompanying kidney transplantation are not fundamentally different from the events that accompany other difficult surgical procedures. However, their course is usually modified by adverse circumstances in the recipient - uremia, dialysis treatment, immunosuppression. ⋯ Other complications are bacterial and viral infections and malignancies. All these complications require a rapid and accurate diagnosis and subsequent targeted treatment with intention to maintain a functional kidney transplant (Fig. 11, Ref. 36). Myocardial infarction is a life-threatening complication of the coronary artery disease - the leading cause of premature death worldwide. The severity of this condition is the result of cellular death following the myocardial ischaemia, which occurs via several mechanism including apoptosis. For the research of this condition, animal models are often employed. ⋯ Previous research demonstrated that by experimentally affecting proapoptotic and antiapoptotic signals, it is possible to influence various aspects of myocardial infarction including: infarction size, cardiac remodelling and prognosis of the heart failure. Future research is warranted to fully elucidate the role of this process during myocardial infarction, which will result in refined diagnostic and therapeutic strategies (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 21). Keywords: myocardial infarction, isoprenaline, apoptosis, necrosis, BCL-2, BAX.

Neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) are markers reflecting the inflammation process that can be easily calculated in the hemogram examination. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in NLR, PLR and MPV values in patients who attempted suicide by taking drugs. ⋯ The high detection of these markers of inflammation suggests that it may be a marker predictive of suicide attempt by taking medication (Tab. 4, Ref. 28).
