Acute biliary pancreatitis is the most common form of acute pancreatitis worldwide. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) may be helpful in detecting common bile duct stones and in indicating more invasive endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) examinations or determining rarer aetiologies of acute pancreatitis. ⋯ The use of EUS in patients with acute pancreatitis is very helpful in determining the treatment strategy (ERCP indication) and may reduce hospital mortality (Tab. 2, Ref. 14).

Mitochondria are intracellular organelles involved in a number of key biologic processes in the cell, including energy production, redox signaling, calcium homeostasis, inflammation, senescence, innate immune response, and mitophagy. Mitochondrial cytopathies include a heterogeneous group of diseases that are characterized by impaired oxidative phosphorylation, leading to multi-organ involvement and progressive clinical deterioration. ⋯ The role of mitochondria in a pathogenesis of nephrotoxicity and kidney carcinogenesis is also discussed (Tab. 2, Fig. 7, Ref. 100). Keywords: mitochondrial nephropathy, interstitial nephritis, glomerulosclerosis, diabetic nephropathy, nephrotoxicity, mitochondrial cytopathies.

The overworld health problem, the incurable disease, the global burden on health insurers and society, and above all one of the leading causes of death - all characterize diabetes mellitus, a lifelong chronic disease that affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. The new types of biosensors bring new opportunities in the care of diabetic patients and improve current methods. The practical relevance of the recent findings is expected in medicine in next years. ⋯ The authors summarized the modern possibilities of biosensing, their pros and cons, and their perspectives for the future. The discussion outcome from the current literature (Tab. 4, Fig. 1, Ref. 63).

The aim of the study is to examine the effect of Ambroxol on TNF-α and IL-1β released after liver ischemia-reperfusion injury. ⋯ It was determined that Ambroxol treatment suppressed the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-1β in rats undergoing hepatic ischemia reperfusion (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 28).

Using neural stem cells (NSCs) in cell therapy and regenerative medicine is a growing knowledge. In this study, the protective role of carnosic acid and trehalose against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in autophagy induction and apoptosis inhibition in NSCs was investigated. ⋯ Due to the carnosic acid and trehalose unique properties and its low toxicity, it can be used as an agent in cellular transplantation for reducing oxidative stress and inducing autophagy (Fig. 4, Ref. 37).
