Desde el ISET al InDRE. II. Instituto de Salubridad y Enfermedades Tropicales: madurez y consolidación, 1940-1964.
The period that starts in 1940 is crucial for the creation of Mexico's modern health system. The Institute of Sanitary and Tropical Diseases is the pioneer institution in health research and on its first two decades it achieved maturity and consolidated lines of research expressed in almost 1700 publications. ⋯ It faced limitations to renew lines of research, researchers and laboratory equipment. However, its role in public health decisions of the country remained central.

Research ethics must include theoretical and practical dimensions. The first one is structured by regulations and policies, and the second dimension refers to how the committee interprets and applies those regulations and policies. This article analyses the operation of the committees at a practical level. Given that the evaluation and judgement of research protocols is a process that requires full awareness, its omission entails important implications for health research.

The first draft of the human genome sequencing published in 2001 reported a large number of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Given that these polymorphisms could practically represent all the variability involved in the susceptibility, protection, severity, among other aspects, of various common diseases, as well as in their response to medications, it was thought that they might be "the biomarkers of choice" in personalized genomic medicine. ⋯ The use of these markers has served to identify regions of the genome involved in Mendelian diseases (one gene-one disease) or genes directly associated with multifactorial diseases. This review has the purpose to describe the role of STRs, VNTRs, SNPs, CNVs and INDELs in linkage and association studies and their role in Mendelian and multifactorial diseases.

In Mexico, the complexity of the comprehensive care of a girl, boy or adolescent who is the victim of any form of child abuse requires the necessary legal knowledge for comprehensive management. Physicians probably lack sufficient knowledge of the laws to understand and correctly address the legal aspects immersed in the comprehensive care of this population group. ⋯ The purpose of this article is to present the existing legal framework in Mexico and the actions of world organizations in this area. It is necessary for the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States to be the basis on which legal behaviors related to child abuse, crime investigation and administration of justice are founded, as well as for international agreements on the subject, which have been signed by the government of Mexico, to be adhered to.

Morphea, or localized scleroderma, is a rare disease of the connective tissue that manifests itself with localized sclerosis of the skin and, in some cases, with extracutaneous manifestations. Its etiology is not fully understood, but it is believed that there is genetic predisposition, in addition to environmental triggering factors. Classification of the disease is not simple due to its multiple presentations; however, it is useful in order to define the treatment, which should be individualized and started early to avoid cosmetic and functional complications. In this review, we summarize the most important practical aspects of the classification, diagnostic methods and evaluation of morphea activity, as well as available therapeutic options, with an emphasis on existing clinical evidence regarding their efficacy and safety.
