Background: Mucopolysaccharidoses (MPSs) are lysosomal storage disorders wherein glycosaminoglycans accumulate because the enzymes that degrade them are insufficient. The earliest symptoms, which are the main reasons for seeking consultation, are otorhinolaryngological and commonly occur in MPS I, II, IV, and VI. This retrospective study aimed to determine the occurrence of otorhinolaryngological manifestations in MPS patients in Taiwan and to analyze the prognosis of surgical intervention, including its effect on symptoms. ⋯ Moreover, 76% of the patients underwent ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery, including adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, tympanostomy with ventilation tube insertion, tracheotomy, and supraglottoplasty. Conclusions: MPS patients had a high incidence of ENT problems. ENT surgery reduced the severity of hearing loss, degree of symptoms related to upper airway obstruction, and severity of respiratory tract and otological infections of patients with MPS.

Leptin regulates OPG and RANKL expression in Gingival Fibroblasts and Tissues of Chronic Periodontitis Patients.
Objective: Chronic periodontitis is a bone-destructive disease affecting periodontal support structures. Although leptin has a protective effect against periodontitis, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the possible role of leptin by examining its relationship with OPG and RANKL in human gingival tissues obtained from patients with chronic periodontitis. ⋯ Leptin was positively correlated with OPG(r = 0.905, p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with RANKL (r = -0.635, p < 0.01). In vitro low concentrations of leptin led to an increased OPG/RANKL mRNA ratio, whereas the opposite effect was observed at high concentrations. Conclusion: Leptin can regulate OPG and RANKL expression in gingival fibroblasts and may thus play a role in the development of chronic periodontitis by modulating the OPG/RANKL ratio.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a common type of primary liver cancer, is one of the most aggressive malignant tumors worldwide. Although overall survival (OS) rates for HCC has significantly improved in recent years, however, the exact predictive value of microRNA (miRNA) for the prognosis of HCC has not yet been recognized. Here, we aimed to identify potential prognostic miRNAs involved in HCC by bioinformatics analysis and validated expression levels through quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and GEO database. ⋯ Compared with normal and benign group, the relative expression level of hsa-miR-139-3p was significantly decreased, while hsa-miR-7-5p and hsa-miR-760 were distinctly increased in the plasma of HCC patients. The same results were observed in the independent cohort. Collectively, our research suggested that three-miRNA signature could serve as an independent prognostic indicator for HCC patients.

Squamous cell cancer of head and neck (HNSCC) is the sixth most common malignancy worldwide. One of the most common HNSCC types is oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), which is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in Taiwan. Tripartite motif 21 (TRIM21) has been reported to play an important role in different cancer types. ⋯ After adjusting for other covariants, OSCC patients with G/T at TRIM21 rs4144331 had a high risk for distant metastasis compared with G/G homozygotes. This study is the first to examine the risk factors associated with TRIM21 SNPs in OSCC progression and development. Thus, our findings suggest that this study is the first to examine the risk factors associated with TRIM21 SNPs in OSCC progression and development and suggest that interactions between mutant genes may alter the susceptibility to OSCC.

Deterioration of drugs due to light exposure is one of the major concerns, especially regarding protection of high-calorie infusion solutions, lightproof covers are used in hospitals. In the absence of any set standards regarding their usage, they are often reused. This study aimed to investigate bacterial contamination of lightproof covers used in hospital wards. ⋯ However, no bacteria were detected from either inside or outside of the unused lightproof covers that were stored in the drugs department. After allowing the unused lightproof covers stored in the drugs department to stand for 24 h, Bacillus species and CNS were detected in only one of the covers, whereas no bacteria was detected in other covers. These results indicate that there is a risk of bacterial contamination in the reuse of lightproof covers and that they should either be disposed off properly after usage or hand, finger disinfectants should be used while handling them to prevent any possible contamination.
