Introduction: Dysphagia-associated pneumonia is a critical health issue especially in the elders and stroke patients which carries a poorer prognosis. Therefore, we aim to identify methods with the potentials to predict subsequent pneumonia in dysphagia patients, which will be of great value in the prevention and early management of pneumonia. Methods: One-hundred dysphagia patients were enrolled and measurements including Dysphagia Severity Scale (DSS), Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), Ohkuma Questionnaire, and Eating Assessment Tool-10 (EAT-10) were assessed by either videofluoroscopy (VF), videoendoscopy (VE), or the study nurse. ⋯ Conclusions: Dysphagia severity evaluated by VE-DSS, VE-FOIS, VF-FOIS, Ohkuma Questionnaire, and EAT-10 is not associated with subsequent pneumonia. Only VF-DSS is associated with both short-term and long-term subsequent pneumonia. In patients with dysphagia, VF-DSS is predictive of subsequent pneumonia.

The treatment of bone loss due to periodontitis has posed a great challenge for physicians for decades. Therefore, it is of extraordinary significance to identify an effective regeneration scheme for alveolar bone. This study aimed to investigate long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) small nucleolar RNA host gene 5 (SNHG5) whether sponges microRNA-23b-3p (miR-23b-3p) to achieve the osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSCs). ⋯ Dual luciferase report and RNA pulldown assay verified that miR-23b-3p is a regulatory target of SNHG5 and that Runx2 is a gene target of miR-23b-3p. In brief, the results demonstrate that SNHG5 promotes the osteogenic differentiation of hPDLSCs by regulating the miR-23b-3p/Runx2 axis. Our study provides novel mechanistic insights into the critical role of lncRNA SNHG5 as a miR-23b-3p sponge to regulate Runx2 expression in hPDLSCs and may serve as a potential therapeutics target for periodontitis.

Although B lymphocytes are widely known to participate in the immune response, the conclusive roles of B lymphocyte subsets in the antitumor immune response have not yet been determined. Single-cell data from GEO datasets were first analyzed, and then a B cell flow cytometry panel was used to analyze the peripheral blood of 89 HCC patients and 33 healthy controls recruited to participate in our research. Patients with HCC had a higher frequency of B10 cells and a lower percentage of MZB cells than healthy controls. ⋯ For the first time, our results suggest that altered B cell subsets are associated with the development and prognosis of HCC. Increased B10 cell percentage and IL-10 in HCC patients suggest they might augment the development of liver tumors. Hence, B cell subsets and related cytokines may have predictive value in HCC patients and could be potential targets for immunotherapy in HCC.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common and malignant liver tumor worldwide, although the treatment approaches for HCC continue to evolve, metastasis is the main reason for high mortality rates. S100 calcium-binding protein A11 (S100A11), an important member of the S100 family of small calcium-binding proteins, is overexpressed in various cells and regulates tumor development and metastasis. However, few studies report the role and underlying regulatory mechanisms of S100A11 in HCC development and metastasis. ⋯ Further analysis implied that S100A11 outperforms AFP in determining whether HCC patients have hematogenous metastasis or not. Using in vitro cell culture model, we demonstrated that S100A11 is overexpressed in metastatic hepatoma cells, knockdown of S100A11 decreases hepatoma cells proliferation, migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition process by inhibiting AKT and ERK signaling pathways. Altogether, our study provides new sights into the biological function and mechanisms underlying S100A11 in promoting metastasis of HCC and explores a novel target for HCC diagnosis and treatment.

Sex-specific genetic variants associated with adult-onset inguinal hernia in a Taiwanese population.
Introduction: Inguinal hernia repair is one of the most common surgeries worldwide. However, there is limited information on its underlying genetic mechanism. Studies on the genetic factors related to inguinal hernia in Han Chinese are lacking. ⋯ Additionally, rs3809060 was specifically associated with male patients with direct-type inguinal hernia (OR: 1.62, 95% CI: 1.19 - 2.22, p = 0.002). Conclusion: Genetic susceptibility appears to participate in the pathogenesis of inguinal hernia in the Taiwanese population in a sex-specific manner. Future studies are needed to illuminate the complex interplay between heredity and comorbidities.
