Currently, consensus reports on the nutritional management for gastric cancer patients receiving gastric resection are lacking. The Gastroenterological Society of Taiwan therefore organized the Taiwan Gastric Cancer Nutritional Consensus Team to provide an overview of evidence and recommendations on nutritional support for gastric cancer patients undergoing gastrectomy. This consensus statement on the nutritional support for gastric cancer patients has two major sections:(1)perioperative nutritional support; and (2)long-term postoperative nutritional care. ⋯ Compared to late oral feeding, early oral feeding can reduce hospital stay in gastric cancer patients receiving gastrectomy without an increase in complication rate. Routine supplementation with vitamin B12 is indicated for gastric cancer patients undergoing a total gastrectomy. Both high-dose oral vitamin B12 supplementation and intramuscular administration of vitamin B12 are equally effective in the treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency.

This study aimed to evaluate geographic variations and differences in the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia between Taiwan's townships. ⋯ Geographic variations exist in the prevalence of hypertriglyceridemia, and hypercholesterolemia. Our findings indicate that the prevention and treatment services in these high prevalence areas should be a priority.

Mycobacterium gordonae is a ubiquitous environmental mycobacteria and has been long considered an opportunistic pathogen, causing infections only in immunocompromised hosts. Cases of M. gordonae related infections in immunocompetent host have rarely been reported, and the pathogenicity of M. gordonae remained uncertain. ⋯ Compatible with the literature reports, we demonstrate that M. gordonae could be pathogenic and causing infection not only in the immunocompromised host, but also in the otherwise healthy population. Multi-antimicrobial combination and adequate source control could have good therapeutic effect for patients with M. gordonae infections.

Cisplatin-resistant oral cancer is clinically difficult to manage and the dose-dependent toxicities of cisplatin has been widely concerned. Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), known as mustard oil, is a plant-derived compound abundant in cruciferous vegetables. It is reported to have anti-cancer potential as a natural dietary chemopreventive compound against a variety of cancers, but the effect of AITC on cisplatin-resistant cancer cells is still little-known. ⋯ AITC can inhibit Akt/mTOR proliferation signaling and promote mitochondria-dependent apoptotic pathway through AITC-enhanced activities of caspase-3 and caspase-9 in CAR cells.

The transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair using MitraClip has been a safe and effective treatment for severe mitral regurgitation (MR). In patients with severe MR and cardiogenic shock under hemodynamic supporting devices, emergent surgical mitral valve interventions carry extremely high risk for peri-operative morbidities and mortalities. The feasibility and efficacy of emergent MitraClip to rescue patients in critical conditions remains elucidate. ⋯ When open-heart surgery is not feasible, trans-catheter mitral valve repair is an alternative way to rescue patients in cardiogenic shock status.
