Radiation-induced swallowing dysfunction in patients with head and neck cancer: A literature review.
Swallowing dysfunction is a prevailing state following radiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer. Following the advancement of cancer treatment in recent years, the survival rate of head and neck cancer has gradually increased. Simultaneously, patients with head and neck cancer suffer due to the long-duration and more prominent swallowing dysfunction states. ⋯ When swallowing dysfunction occurs, patients usually seek medical help and are referred for rehabilitation therapy, such as muscle strengthening and tongue resistance exercise. Furthermore, clinicians should discuss with patients how and when to place the feeding tube. Only through detailed evaluation and management can swallowing dysfunction resolve and improve the quality of life of patients with head and neck cancer following radiotherapy.

The intracavernosal (IC) injection of chitosan activated platelet rich plasma (cPRP) has shown to improve the erectile dysfunction in cavernous nerve injury rat model. However, the action target of PRP in improving neurogenic erectile dysfunction remains unclear. We aimed to determine the effect of cPRP action at early stage that further mediates its effect on erectile function (EF) recovery in the bilateral cavernous nerve crushing (BCNC) injury rat model. ⋯ These results suggest that the application of cPRP was beneficial to restore EF via neuroprotective and tissue-protective effects at early stage.

Bronchoscopic interventions (BIs) and airway management for bronchoscopy are exceptionally high-risk procedures not only for anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, but also for nursing staff because they expose nurses to COVID-19-containing droplets. However, perioperative changes can be made to the anesthetic management for nonintubated BIs to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

The application of the checkbox for identifying patients with traits of both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma proposed by the 2015 Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)/Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) recommendations has not been well studied although such identification is important in clinical practice. Thus, we aimed to investigate the prevalence and features of COPD coexistent with asthma traits diagnosed based on the 2015 GINA/GOLD strategies, and explore the gap between guidelines and routine practice in the diagnosis and pharmacological management of such condition in a COPD cohort. ⋯ We found that measuring circulatory eosinophil and total IgE levels may raise clinicians' awareness of the presence of traits of asthma in the management of COPD.

Molecular diagnosis and therapy for Plasmodium ovale infection of a returned traveler from East Africa.
Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites that are mainly transmitted through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. The average annual number of malaria cases was less than ten in Taiwan in the last five years. Most of the cases were caused by Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum, and were primarily diagnosed in travelers who returned from Southeast Asia and Africa. Here, we report the first case of Plasmodium ovale infection within five years that was confirmed by peripheral blood smear examination and molecular identification in a 25-year-old Asian female patient who returned from Uganda.
