To investigate the surface characteristics of titanium (Ti) implant materials, which were coated with different thicknesses of nanoscale tin oxide (SnO2) using the atomic layer deposition technique, and evaluated its biological performance on human embryonic palatal mesenchyme (HEPM) cells. ⋯ The results showed that the cell growth was intensified with rough surfaces. However, the OCN and morphology change was prominent when the nanoroughness was increased, which meant the increased nanoroughness might enhance OCN production and improve the tendency of osseointegration. The nanoscale SnO2 coating could increase the ability of bone formation but not cell growth.

There is a lack of published research on the impact of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. We investigated the mortality risk factors among critically ill patients with COVID-19 in Taiwan during the initial wave. Furthermore, we aim to develop a novel AI mortality prediction model using chest X-ray (CXR) alone. ⋯ The mortality rate of COVID-19 patients who receive invasive mechanical ventilation was high. Septic shock and high BRIXIA score were clinical predictors of mortality. The novel AI mortality prediction model using CXR alone exhibited a high performance.

To investigate the long-term treatment outcomes of early stage bulky cervical cancer treated with definite chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) using intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) followed by intracavity brachytherapy (ICRT) and the impact of histologic subtype on survival. ⋯ After long-term follow up, definite CCRT using IMRT followed by ICRT is a feasible treatment with favorable acute and late treatment toxicities for patients with early stage bulky cervical cancer. This treatment outcomes were excellent for "bulky" FIGO stage IB2-IIB SCC of the uterine cervix but seemed insufficient for AC/ASC of uterine cervix.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne infection caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytophilum. In this study, we report an indigenous case of clinically diagnosed HGA. The patient was a 41-year-old man who experienced a tick bite and later developed fever, chills, myalgia, malaise, thrombocytopenia, leukocytosis with a left shift, elevated hepatic transaminase levels, and splenomegaly upon admission to the hospital. ⋯ Oral doxycycline and intravenous ceftriaxone were prescribed, and the patient made a full recovery. Our findings indicate the presence of HGA on the main island of Taiwan. Precautions against tick bites should be taken when engaging in outdoor activities, and HGA should be considered by physicians in the differential diagnosis.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and overactive bladder might share common pathophysiologies. Environmental fructose exposure during pre- and postnatal periods of rats may program MetS-associated bladder overactivity. We explored the dysregulated insulin signalling at bladder mucosa, as a common mechanism, in facilitating bladder overactivity in rats with MetS induced by maternal and post-weaning fructose diet. ⋯ Our results show dysregulated insulin signalling at bladder mucosa should be a common mechanism of MetS-associated bladder overactivity programmed by pre-and postnatal fructose diet.
