Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pathogen that causes respiratory diseases in children. Infections caused by M. pneumoniae are usually self-limited but occasionally can be severe. We observed emerging cases of severe mycoplasma infection requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Thus, we investigated chronological changes in the molecular features of the M. pneumoniae and its clinical impacts among the pediatric population. ⋯ Obtaining accurate information on macrolide susceptibility is crucial for physicians to initiate appropriate antibiotic treatment in a timely fashion. Although we could not identify significant differences among mycoplasma pneumonias caused by different MLVAs over a span of 9 years, the emergence of severe mycoplasma infections requiring ECMO was clinically significant, and further monitoring was required.

Epstein-Barr virus-related hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (EBV-HLH) is a life-threatening hyperinflammatory syndrome. Although etoposide-based immunochemotherapy has improved survival rates, consensus regarding the appropriate salvage therapy for patients with refractory or relapsed EBV-HLH is lacking. We performed a retrospective study to examine the efficacy of a lymphoma-based treatment regimen for children with refractory or relapsed EBV-HLH. ⋯ Four patients (67%) were disease free for a median of 10 years without undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. No grade 3 or 4 nonhematologic adverse events occurred. Lymphoma-based chemotherapy is a potential curative treatment for some subgroups of children with refractory or relapsed EBV-HLH.

Hereditary cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are characterized by clustered dilated capillary-like vessels in the brain. Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is characterized by renal cysts and extra-renal abnormalities. We report a Taiwanese family in which the index case exhibited coexisting phenotypes of both CCMs and PKD. ⋯ Segregation analysis revealed that four siblings were affected by either isolated aforementioned PKD2 or CCM2 variant. Notably, radiological CCMs were exclusively found in siblings who had this CCM2 variant, and bilateral internal carotid artery aneurysms were restricted to one sibling who had the PKD2 variant but not the CCM2 variant. Our study expands the genetic spectrum of CCM2 and demonstrates unambiguous cosegregation of CCM2 and PKD2 variants with their respective phenotypes.

To evaluate the perioperative outcome of laparoendoscopic two-site myomectomy (LETS-M). ⋯ LETS-M using conventional laparoscopic equipment is a minimally invasive surgical method that is safe, effective, and easy to learn for managing uterine myoma. It is useful to achieve a favorable perioperative outcome with acceptable operation time.

Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a relatively rare type of urothelial carcinoma. Additionally, only few reports have examined the sex differences in patients with UTUC. Therefore, the present study aimed to identify the sex factors affecting renal function in patients with UTUC who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). ⋯ The female sex is significantly associated with a higher prevalence of advanced CKD stage, and dialysis among patients with UTUC who underwent RNU in our institute. Sex differences in renal function needs to be considered when evaluating survival.
