A Little Effort Can Withstand the Hardship: Fielding an Internet-Based Intervention to Prevent Depression among Urban Racial/Ethnic Minority Adolescents in a Primary Care Setting.
This study explored the implementation of Chicago Urban Resiliency Building (CURB), a randomized clinical trial designed as an Internet-based primary care depression prevention intervention for urban African American and Latino adolescents. ⋯ This study shares the challenges and successes for depression screening and implementing Internet-based mental health interventions for urban racial/ethnic minority adolescents in primary care settings.

Clinicians' views of an intervention to reduce racial disparities in diabetes outcomes.
Interventions that improve clinicians' awareness of racial disparities and improve their communication skills are considered promising strategies for reducing disparities in health care. We report clinicians' views of an intervention involving cultural competency training and race-stratified performance reports designed to reduce racial disparities in diabetes outcomes. ⋯ The cultural competency training and performance reports were well received by many but not all of the clinicians. Clinicians reported the intervention alone had not empowered them to address the complex, root causes of racial disparities in diabetes outcomes.

A cluster randomized controlled trial to increase breast cancer screening among African American women: the black cosmetologists promoting health program.
African American women have disproportionately higher rates of breast cancer mortality than all other ethnic groups, thus highlighting the importance of promoting early detection. ⋯ Cosmetologists are in an ideal position to increase African American women's breast cancer knowledge and adherence to breast cancer screening guidelines.

A novel approach to quality improvement in a safety-net practice: concurrent peer review visits.
Concurrent peer review visits are structured office visits conducted by clinician peers of the primary care clinician that are specifically designed to reduce competing demands, clinical inertia, and bias. We assessed whether a single concurrent peer review visit reduced clinical inertia and improved control of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes control among underserved patients. ⋯ Concurrent peer review visits represent a promising strategy for improving blood pressure control and improving therapeutic intensification in community health centers.

Primary care clinicians' knowledge and confidence about newborn screening for sickle cell disease: randomized assessment of educational strategies.
In Massachusetts, primary care clinicians receive and act upon hemoglobinopathy newborn screening results. We assessed clinicians' knowledge, confidence, and practices regarding hemoglobinopathy newborn screening, and the effect of mailed educational materials vs interactive seminar on knowledge and confidence. ⋯ Both educational strategies led to modest improvements in knowledge about newborn screening for hemoglobin disorders. Enhancing knowledge and confidence about newborn screening-related tasks may improve clinicians' capacity to act upon newborn screening results for hemoglobinopathies.
