ReviewPromoting Adherence to Iron Chelation Treatment in Beta-Thalassemia Patients.
Thalassaemia is one of the commonest inherited genetic disorders world-wide with around 25,000 births of the most severely affected transfusion dependent children annually. Patients with transfusion dependent thalassaemia require regular blood transfusions to maintain life but because of this will develop iron overload. ⋯ Many of these preventable complications make adherence to therapy more complex for patients. In this review, we focus on two commonly encountered patient scenarios and discuss how different psychological models and a relational theory can be used to understand and support adherence to treatment.

The Patient Activation Measure in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Systematic Review and Cross-Sectional Interview-Based Survey.
The patient activation measure (PAM) is considered a reliable tool for measuring patient activation. This study aimed to systematically review the scientific literature regarding the use of PAM -13 in rheumatology patients and to compare PAM scores in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) following two different practices at a single institution with previously published studies. ⋯ Adequate activation of patients was observed from our center, which was higher than that reported in most published literature. The PAM of patients with RA was variable according to the systematic review. Longitudinal interventional studies should be considered to improve activation in patients with low scores.

Prevalence and Factors Associated with Non-Adherence to Antidiabetic Medication Among Patients at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, Mbarara, Uganda.
Non-adherence is a major concern in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and undermines the goals of treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude of non-adherence and its contributing factors among diabetes mellitus patients attending the diabetes mellitus clinic at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. ⋯ The prevalence of non-adherence to antidiabetic medication was higher than that revealed in previous studies in Uganda. Patients with age above 60 years were six times more likely to be non-adherent to their anti-diabetic medications. Patient education is important to address the challenges of medication non-adherence.

Pediatric-Adult Care Transition: Perceptions of Adolescent and Young Adult Patients with Sickle Cell Disease and Their Healthcare Providers.
The pediatric-adult care transition, which takes place during adolescence, is a high-risk period for medical care adherence in chronic diseases, this encompasses treatment adherence, attending medical consultations and following healthcare advice. Studying perceptions is needed to get a more comprehensive picture of this care transition and to propose interventions to address the gaps. The authors analyzed perceptions from patients and caregivers in adolescents with sickle cell disease. Although this is the first step to improving the actual care management, to our knowledge, no study has explored perceptions from healthcare providers and compared it to patients' perceptions. The purpose of this study was to provide an insight on the experience of adolescent and adult patients, pediatric and adult healthcare providers in the context of pediatric to adult care transition, and analyze those concerns in order to better understand medical care adherence and improve patient care. ⋯ Propositions emerged from patients and healthcare providers to improve care and subsequently to improve medical care adherence in patients with sickle cell disease during and after the pediatric to adult care transition.
