Analgesic efficacy of pre-operative etoricoxib for termination of pregnancy in an ambulatory centre.
Etoricoxib is a second generation cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor with a rapid-onset time and a long duration of action. It is ideal for providing pre-emptive analgesia for ambulatory surgeries. We hypothesised that pre-operative etoricoxib can decrease the use of fentanyl post-operatively, when compared with placebo in patients undergoing termination of pregnancy. We also compared their pain scores, time to discharge, side effects and satisfaction with analgesia post-operatively. ⋯ Pre-operative administration of oral etoricoxib 120 mg decreased the use of fentanyl and pain scores after minor gynaecological surgery without significant side effects.

Recovery following tonsillectomy a comparison between tramadol and morphine for analgesia.
The optimal method of intraoperative analgesia for adult tonsillectomy is uncertain. It is important that recovery should be rapid so that the airway is not compromised. Tramadol hydrochloride is an analgesic with mixed -mu and non-opioid activities which has less respiratory depression effects compared to morphine. ⋯ We conclude that tramadol given for intra-operative analgesia during tonsillectomy results in faster recovery with significantly less nausea and vomiting in the early postoperative period.

Patient-controlled epidural analgesia after thoracic and upper abdominal surgery using sufentanil with and without bupivacaine 0.125%.
Epidural sufentanil can relieve postoperative pain after thoracic and upper abdominal surgery but it has some unwanted side effects. Patient-controlled epidural analgesia (PCEA) allows patients to titrate and reduce their analgesic requirements. ⋯ The PCEA demand-only programme using sufentanil 1 microg/ml with and without bupivacaine 0.125% was satisfactory after thoracotomy and upper abdominal surgery in our patient population. The addition of bupivacaine to sufentanil did not significantly reduce the amount of sufentanil required, the pain scores or the side effects.

The effect of heat and moisture exchanger and gas flow on humidity and temperature in a circle anaesthetic system.
The aim of the study was to measure the humidity and temperature of the inspired gas in a circle absorber system at fresh gas flows of 11/min and 31/min and assess the need of a heat and moisture exchanger (HME). ⋯ This suggests that the inherent humidifying property of the circle system at low fresh gas flow of 1L/min was sufficient in short surgeries lasting less than one hour and that the addition of a HME may not be necessary.

Role of tramadol in reducing pain on propofol injection.
Propofol is frequently associated with pain on injection. We evaluated the effect of tramadol in a randomised, double-blind study using a tourniquet venous retention technique. Normal saline placebo was given intravenously to patients in Group 1 (n = 30),tramadol 50 mg to Group 2 (n = 30), and lignocaine 50 mg to Group 3 (n = 30). ⋯ Pain assessment was made immediately after propofol injection. There was a significant reduction in the incidence of pain associated with propofol administration in patients pretreated with lignocaine and tramadol (P < 0.05). In addition, pretreatment with tramadol was as effective as lignocaine in reducing pain on propofol injection.
