Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) often requires deep sedation. Propofol provides adequate sedation and amnesia at subhypnotic doses, but safe guarding the patient’s airway is important for preventing respiratory depression or hypoxic events. This study compared sedation levels, operator satisfaction, intraoperative and recovery characteristics using sevoflurane with nasal mask and propofol in ERCP. ⋯ In ERCP, propofol infusion provides shorter recovery duration and adequate sedation levels. Sevoflurane and oxygen with a nasal mask can be chosen to generate specific anaesthesia in patients, especially for strong airway support and safety treating hypoxemic patients.

We aimed to investigate the role of Shearwave Elastography (SWE) in the evaluation of response to uterine artery embolization (UAE) in patients with uterine leiomyomas. ⋯ SWE values of leiomyomas after UAE significantly decreased. SWE, with its high reproducibility, could become a useful tool in the follow up of uterin leiomyomas after UAE.

Malnutrition is an important and commonly seen prognostic factor in patients with cirrhosis. The diagnosis of malnutrition in cirrhosis patients may be challenging, and an easily measured and widely usable marker is lacking. Prealbumin, however, is an easily measured marker. In the current study we measured prealbumin levels in cirrhotic patients with no clinically apparent malnutrition and used it as a malnutrition marker. Another aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutritional support on patient with low prealbumin levels. ⋯ Prealbumin can be used as an easily measured parameter for earlier detection of malnutrition in patients with cirrhosis and without clinically apparent malnutrition. Oral nutritional support, especially with products containing relatively high carbohydrate levels and low protein, may have a favorable effect on MELD scores.

The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the incidence and risk factors for the serious complications of pneumothorax and/or parenchymal haemorrhage occurring after computed tomography (CT) guided transthoracic biopsy. ⋯ Pneumothorax and parenchymal haemorrhage are common complications after CT-guided percutaneous biopsy. The minimum number of needle-pleural insertions, the optimal access route to the lesion and as quick as possible biopsy procedure should be selected to reduce the risk of pneumothorax and parenchymal haemorrhage.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma are the most common allergic disorders worldwide. Aeroallergens are critical causative factors in the pathogenesis of these disorders and sensitization to aeroallergens differs in various countries and regions. Identification of the most common aeroallergen sensitization is crucial in the diagnosis and management of AR and asthma. We examined the distribution of aeroallergen sensitizations detected by skin prick tests (SPTs) in adult patients with AR and/or asthma in the city of Bursa. ⋯ Our study revealed that house dust mite was the most common sensitizing aeroallergen in patients with AR and asthma while pollens were the most common allergen in patients with only AR. The sensitization to grass and olive pollen was higher in cases of mild asthma than moderate and severe. Regional allergy panels may provide important clinical clues for characteristics and courses of allergic diseases.
