Diabetes mellitus (DM) could influence various organs, especially the eyes, kidneys, nerves, heart, and blood vessels, and finally results in many irreversible disease-related complications. In this paper, the association between reflux, swallowing, and voice symptoms in patients with DM and the possible effect of diabetic complications on these symptoms were investigated. ⋯ It is possible to conclude that gastrointestinal symptoms such as reflux, dysphonia, and dysphagia are associated with each other and they may possibly be related to the microvascular complications of DM. The clinicians should be aware of the possible reflux, voice, and swallowing complaints and also inquire about the presence of neuropathy and nephropathy in the diabetic population.

Iron deficiency is one of the most common metabolic disorders worldwide and affects multiple organs and systems including the cardiovascular (CV) system. Iron deficiency can cause structural and functional changes in the myocardium. The aim of the study is to evaluate left ventricular (LV) functions in patients with low ferritin levels without anemia by two-dimensional "speckle tracking" echocardiography (2D STE). ⋯ Low ferritin levels can cause subclinical LV systolic dysfunction in patients without anemia. STE provides detailed information about LV functions. With larger studies, these patients should be followed more closely and considered for iron replacement treatment before developing anemia.

In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the change in antimicrobial efficacy related to the presence of the organic load of four different antiseptic solutions that are frequently used in hospitals. ⋯ It is concluded that the antimicrobial efficacy of antiseptic solutions is significantly affected by the organic substances and thus the proper use of antiseptics has become important to achieve successful disinfection and prevention of antibacterial resistance.

Cardiovascular complications, including ventricular arrhythmias associated with abnormalities of ventricular repolarization, are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with acromegaly. Herein, we aimed to investigate ventricular repolarization using Tp-e interval, Tp-e interval/QT, and Tp-e interval/QTc ratios in acromegalic patients compared to healthy subjects. ⋯ The current study is the first to have shown significantly increased Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio were increased in acromegalic patients. These results may be important for screening malignant arrhythmic events in acromegaly.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is an antimalarial that is widely used in the management of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. In this study, we aimed to examine the vascular effects of HCQ on rat aorta (RA). ⋯ HCQ produced relaxation of RA rings. The relaxation mechanism differs according to the concentration of HCQ. At con-centrations of 10-6 and 10-5 M, the relaxation is endothelium-dependent and mediated by NO. We strongly suggest that Ca2+ channel inhibition is involved at concentrations of 10-5 and 10-4 M, as well as NO.
