Post resuscitation management of cardiac arrest patients in the critical care environment: A retrospective audit of compliance with evidence based guidelines.
There is a clear relationship between evidence-based post resuscitation care and survival and functional status at hospital discharge. The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends protocol driven care to enhance chance of survival following cardiac arrest. Healthcare providers have an obligation to ensure protocol driven post resuscitation care is timely and evidence based. ⋯ Evidence-based context-specific guidelines for post resuscitation care that span the whole patient journey are needed. Reliance on national guidelines does not necessarily translate to evidence based care at a local level, so strategies to ensure effective guideline implementation are urgently required.

An investigation of light and sound levels on intensive care units in China.
The intensive care units' (ICU) environment is considered clinically relevant sources of stress for patients. ⋯ High sound pressure levels are prevalent throughout 24h in the ICUs, especially in the SICU. Many of the readings exceeded international standards. Peak sound pressure levels were related primarily to staff activities and the alarm sounds of machines. ICU patients are exposed to high levels of artificial light continuously throughout the day and night.

Predictors of ICU patients' pain management satisfaction: A descriptive cross-sectional survey.
(1) To assess Jordanian ICU patients' pain characteristics (intensity and interference) and levels of pain management satisfaction; and (2) to determine potential predictors of pain management satisfaction among ICU patients. ⋯ Jordanian ICU patients reported high pain levels, which supports the need for applying a caring attitude in managing patients' pain reports. Also, such a study is among the first pain management studies in Jordan aiming at setting the stage for future research studies. Finally, results can be included in planning pain management strategies and protocols within hospitals.

Certainty and uncertainty about end of life care nursing practices in New Zealand Intensive Care Units: a mixed methods study.
With end-of-life (EOL) central to the nursing role in intensive care, few studies have been undertaken to explore EOL care in the context of New Zealand (NZ) intensive care nursing. ⋯ Whilst results from this NZ study broadly align with European studies, uncertainty about specific areas of EOL practices highlight that further guidance for nurses is required.

Nursing care for the families of the dying child/infant in paediatric and neonatal ICU: nurses' emotional talk and sources of discomfort. A mixed methods study.
The majority of in-hospital deaths of children occur in paediatric and neonatal intensive care units. For nurses working in these settings, this can be a source of significant anxiety, discomfort and sense of failure. ⋯ This study provided rich insights into the experiences of nurses who are caring for dying children including the nurses' need to balance the often aggressive treatments with preparation of the family for the possibility of their child's death. There is some room for improvement in nurses' provision of anticipatory guidance, which encompasses effective and open communication, focussed on preparing families for the child's death.
