It Could Never Happen Here: Promoting Violence Prevention Education for Emergency Department Nurses.
HOW TO OBTAIN CONTACT HOURS BY READING THIS ISSUE Instructions: 1.1 contact hours will be awarded by Villanova University College of Nursing upon successful completion of this activity. A contact hour is a unit of measurement that denotes 60 minutes of an organized learning activity. This is a learner-based activity. ⋯ This article outlines three important safety topics and interventions that can be used to assist nurses when managing potentially violent patients: creating a safe emergency department environment, recognizing and evaluating the behaviors of a potentially violent patient, and identifying nurses' behaviors that may trigger patient violence. Nurses educated in violence prevention will be better prepared to recognize potentially violent patients, use specific strategies to prevent violence, and manage a violent event in a safe, professional manner. This pilot study explored the effectiveness of an online workshop provided to faculty teaching one course in a large online RN-to-baccalaureate nursing (BSN) program. This exploration helped to fill a gap in knowledge related to implementing best classroom teaching practices into distance education for online nursing students. Focus groups with purposeful sampling (three focus groups: two faculty focus groups with a total of 11 faculty and one student focus group with a total of six students) were used to assess the effectiveness of the workshop and faculty and student perceptions of the seven best classroom teaching practices. ⋯ Themes derived from the student focus group included engagement, availability, encouragement, and diverse learning. Impact of Nurse Certification Rates on Patient Satisfaction and Outcomes: A Literature Review.
The Institute of Medicine's report The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health states that continued competence requires lifelong learning. Certification measures lifelong learning by validating the expertise of nurses in specialty areas beyond those required by licensure examinations. ⋯ Increased public scrutiny and accountability highlights the need for research to substantiate the quantitative benefits of nurse certification on patient satisfaction and outcomes. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey scores, the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing program, and the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators(®) are potential sources for producing the reliable and valid evidence needed to convince RNs, hospital administrators, and all other stakeholders that nurse certification has a quantifiable correlation with patient satisfaction and outcomes.
