Nurses working in critical care often undertake specialty education. There are no uniform practice outcomes for critical care programs, and consumer input to practice standards has been lacking. ⋯ The SPECT appears to have clinical feasibility, preliminary validity and reliability, and provides a clear definition for the expected practice level for graduates of a critical care education program.

Intensive care units (ICUs) encompass advanced clinical management and technology, mandating continuing education for nurses to maintain competency. This study examined nurses' perceptions of current education on invasive mechanical ventilation in an Australian ICU. ⋯ Respondents recognized the need for interactive, practical, bedside education sessions to transfer learning into the everyday work environment.

A mixed-methods study was conducted to enhance understanding of nurses' clinical reasoning in recognizing delirium in the hospitalized older adult. Paired nurse and researcher ratings of the confusion assessment method in 103 medical-surgical patients were analyzed to determine the rate of agreement in detecting delirium and to identify a purposive sample of nurses to be interviewed about the patients with delirium who were under their care. Nurses' clinical reasoning in recognizing and underrecognizing delirium was investigated using semistructured interviews. ⋯ Sixteen nurses were interviewed and transcripts were analyzed with grounded theory. Confusion was the primary causal factor for recognizing symptoms of delirium. The findings explicated a framework that forms the basis for generating testable assumptions to improve nurses' recognition of delirium.

One goal of continuing education is to improve nurses' performance and the quality of patient care. However, in most cases, nurses do not use the information gained through continuing education in the clinical environment. This study was conducted to explore nurses' experiences with applying new knowledge obtained from these programs in clinical settings. ⋯ A considerable amount of the annual budget is allocated to continuing education. Therefore, the findings of this study, which described nurses' experience with applying what they learned through continuing education in clinical practice, can offer valuable information to help managers improve continuing education programs and the application of new knowledge in the clinical environment.

Many adverse events in health care are caused by teamwork and communication breakdown. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of a point-of-care simulation-based team training curriculum on measurable teamwork and communication skills in staff caring for postoperative patients. ⋯ Simulation-based team training for staff caring for perioperative patients is associated with measurable improvements in teamwork and communication.
