The influence of an injury prevention program on young road users: a German experience.
Trauma remains a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in youth. The Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth (P.A.R.T.Y.) program is an injury prevention program. The aim of the study was to analyze the influence on risk-taking behaviors and risk awareness on young road users by a pre-post-questionnaire. ⋯ The P.A.R.T.Y. program focuses on items like "use of helmet and mobile phones" and "alcohol/drug abuse". Evaluating the program helps to uncover vulnerabilities and to enhance important effects. Some of these items are addressed by the program, whereas some are not. It will be important to improve the program according to address topics that have not shown significant improvements, so that students learn more about the dangers and the right behavior in road traffic.

Epidemiology of open tibia fractures in a population-based database: update on current risk factors and clinical implications.
Open tibia fractures usually occur in high-energy mechanisms and are commonly associated with multiple traumas. The purposes of this study were to define the epidemiology of open tibia fractures in severely injured patients and to evaluate risk factors for major complications. ⋯ Open tibia fractures are common in multiple trauma patients and are therefore associated with increased resuscitation requirements, more surgical procedures and increased in-hospital length of stay. However, increased systemic complications are not observed if a soft tissue adapted surgical protocol is applied.

The Alvarado Score is accurate in pregnancy: a retrospective case-control study.
Acute appendicitis is the most frequent abdominal condition that requires non-obstetric surgical intervention during pregnancy. This study aims to scan pregnant patients operated on for acute appendicitis to evaluate the efficiency of using the Alvarado Score (AS) for diagnosis. ⋯ As a result, when the data collected by our study are evaluated, we see that pregnancy does not have a negative effect on the efficacy of AS. Therefore, the AS system can be an easy, non-invasive auxiliary diagnostic tool with high diagnosis accuracy rates that can be used in pregnant patients suspected of having acute appendicitis.

Platelet-rich plasma as an additional therapeutic option for infected wounds with multi-drug resistant bacteria: in vitro antibacterial activity study.
Infected wounds, such as diabetic foot infections, are mostly polymicrobial and microorganisms have high resistance rates to antimicrobials. Infected wounds in diabetic patients have high cost, morbidity, and mortality rates. Based on these facts, there is a need for supportive localized treatment options such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) implementations. Demonstrating the in vitro antimicrobial effect, our aim was to lead up to clinical trials of localized PRP implementations in infected wounds such as diabetic foot infections. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the in vitro antibacterial activity of PRP against methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and three more multi-drug resistant bacteria species that are important and hard-to-treat in wound infections. ⋯ Emerging PRP and other platelet-derived products seem to be promising alternative tools besides antibiotic treatment, debridement, negative pressure wound therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and other treatment options for treating diabetic foot infections.
