Pre-hospital trauma care in Switzerland and Germany: do they speak the same language?
Swiss and German (pre-)hospital systems, distribution and organization of trauma centres differ from each other. It is unclear if outcome in trauma patients differs as well. Therefore, this study aims to determine differences in characteristics, therapy and outcome of trauma patients between both German-speaking countries. ⋯ This study demonstrates that patients' age, trauma patterns and pre-hospital care differ between Germany and Switzerland. However, adjusted mortality was almost similar. Further benchmarking studies are indicated to optimize trauma care in both German-speaking countries.

Nationwide enumeration of emergency operations performed in Ghana.
To determine the population-based rate of emergency surgery performed in Ghana, categorized by hospital level. ⋯ Emergency operations make up nearly half of all operations performed in Ghana. Most are performed at district hospitals, many of which do not have fully trained surgeons. Obstetric procedures make up a large portion of emergency operations, indicating a need for improved provision of non-obstetric emergency surgical care. These data are useful for future benchmarking efforts to improve availability of emergency surgical care in Ghana and other low- and middle-income countries.

ReviewImplementation methods of infection prevention measures in orthopedics and traumatology - a systematic review.
Prevention of hospital-acquired infections, in the clinical field of orthopedics and traumatology especially surgical site infections, is one of the major concerns of patients and physicians alike. Many studies have been conducted proving effective infection prevention measures. The clinical setting, however, requires strategies to transform this knowledge into practice. ⋯ Although evidence was scarce and quality-inconsistent, we found that adhering to a set of implementation methods focusing on interdisciplinary and interactive /interpersonal work might be an advisable strategy when planning IP improvement interventions in orthopedics and traumatology.

Randomized Controlled TrialTeam-based learning for teaching musculoskeletal ultrasound skills: a prospective randomised trial.
The aim of this prospective randomised trial was to assess the impact of the team-based learning approach on basic musculoskeletal ultrasound skills in comparison to both peer-assisted and conventional teaching and to examine the influence of gender and learning style on learning outcomes. ⋯ Team-based learning proved to be superior to peer-assisted and conventional teaching of musculoskeletal ultrasound skills.

Survey on structural preparedness for treatment of thoracic and abdominal trauma in German-speaking level 1 trauma centers.
Increasing sub-specialization has reduced the number of general surgeons involved in the care of trauma patients in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) over the past decades. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess, to what extent level 1 trauma centers are still prepared to provide immediate emergency surgery in patients with thoracic or abdominal trauma. ⋯ The majority of level 1 trauma centers in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in the TR-DGU seem to be well prepared to treat severe injuries of the abdominal and thoracic cavities. In some centers, however, a surgeon able to perform an emergency laparotomy or thoracotomy is not available within 30 min.
