Surgical suction filter-derived bone graft displays osteogenic miRNA and mRNA patterns.
Recently, a surgical suction filter device was introduced which aims at generating a suction filter-derived bone grafting substitute (SF-BGS). The osteogenic capacity of this grafting material, however, is unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) and osteogenic mRNAs may influence these processes. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the quality of the SF-BGS by determining the expression of miRNAs and osteogenic mRNAs. ⋯ This study revealed distinctly deregulated and exclusively expressed osteogenic miRNAs in SF-BGS, as well as overall enhanced osteogenic marker gene expression, as compared to the venous blood control group. These expression profiles were not seen in control samples, indicating that the derived material displays an osteogenic profile. It may therefore be a promising tool to generate a BGS or graft extender when needed.

Outcome predictors of patients who underwent limb amputation/s following trauma at a level I trauma center in North India.
Limb amputation is one of the oldest medical operations, dating back over 2500 years to Hippocrates' time. In developing countries like India, most of the patients are young, and trauma is the primary cause of limb amputation. The objectives of this study were to investigate the factors that can predict the outcome of patients who underwent upper or lower limb amputations. ⋯ Factors that affected the outcome were delayed presentation, hemorrhagic shock, higher ISS, NISS, MESS scores, surgical-site infection, and associated injuries. Overall mortality during the study was 8.6%.

Opportunities and barriers for prehospital emergency medical services research in the Netherlands; results of a mixed-methods consensus study.
Quality improvement in prehospital emergency medical services (EMS) can only be achieved by high-quality research and critical appraisal of current practices. This study examines current opportunities and barriers in EMS research in the Netherlands. ⋯ Barriers for prehospital EMS research in the Netherlands include issues regarding the use of patient data, privacy and legislation, funding and research culture in EMS organizations. Opportunities to increase scientific productivity in EMS research include the development of a national strategy for EMS data and the incorporation of EMS topics in research agendas of national medical professional associations.

3D osteotomies-improved accuracy with patient-specific instruments (PSI).
Three-dimensional (3D) printed patient-specific instruments (PSI) have been introduced to increase precision and simplify surgical procedures. Initial results in femoral and tibial osteotomies are promising, but validation studies on 3D planning, manufacturing of patient-specific cutting blocks and 3D evaluation of the attained results are lacking. ⋯ With 3D cutting blocks and spacers, the 3D planning of the HTO can be translated into reality with small deviations of the resulting joint angles. Within this study, the results of the individual steps are examined for errors and thus a critical evaluation of this new and promising method for performing patient-specific HTOs is presented.

Sex disparities in adverse outcomes after surgically managed isolated traumatic spinal injury.
Traumatic spinal injury (TSI) encompasses a wide range of injuries affecting the spinal cord, nerve roots, bones, and soft tissues that result in pain, impaired mobility, paralysis, and death. There is some evidence suggesting that women may have different physiological responses to traumatic injury compared to men; therefore, this study aimed to investigate if there are any associations between sex and adverse outcomes following surgically managed isolated TSI. ⋯ Female sex is associated with a significantly decreased risk of in-hospital mortality as well as cardiopulmonary and venothromboembolic complications following surgical management of traumatic spinal injuries. Further studies are needed to elucidate the cause of these differences.
