Premedication with oral paracetamol for reduction of propofol injection pain: a randomized placebo-controlled trial.
To compare the effect of premedication with 2 different doses of oral paracetamol to prevent pain at propofol intravenous injection. ⋯ A premedication with oral paracetamol can dose-dependently reduce pain at propofol intravenous injection. To avoid this common uncomfortable concern for the patients, this well-tolerated, available and cheap treatment appears as an option to be implemented in the current practice.

Acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery significantly associates with morbidity and mortality. Despite not requiring cardiopulmonary bypass, transcatheter aortic valve replacement patients have an incidence of post-procedural acute kidney injury similar to patients who undergo open surgical aortic valve replacement. Packed red blood cell transfusion has been associated with morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery. We hypothesized that packed red blood cell transfusion independently associates with acute kidney injury after transcatheter aortic valve replacement, after accounting for other risk factors. ⋯ Packed red blood cell transfusion, along with post-procedure use of inotropes and vasopressors, independently associate with acute kidney injury after transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Further studies are needed to elucidate the pathobiology underlying these associations.

Preemptive oxycodone is superior to equal dose of sufentanil to reduce visceral pain and inflammatory markers after surgery: a randomized controlled trail.
Postoperative visceral pain is common after surgery and previous studies have demonstrated that oxycodone is an effective treatment. In this study, we compared the effects of preemptive oxycodone to equal dose of sufentanil on postoperative pain and serum level of inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10) after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. ⋯ Preemptive oxycodone 0.1 mg/kg administration could effectively suppress visceral pain at 2 h and 4 h after surgery and had lower inflammatory marker, serum TNF-α, level when compared to equal dose of sufentanil.

Newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE) as a predictor of hemodynamic response in children younger than 2 years under general anesthesia: an observational pilot study.
It is still unknown whether newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE), based on heart rate variability (HRV) as a reflection of parasympathetic nerve tone, can predict the hemodynamic response to a nociception stimulus in children less than 2 years old. ⋯ NIPE reflected nociceptive events as well as anesthestic induction in children less than 2 years undergoing general anaesthetia. Nevertheless, NIPE may not serve as a sensitive and specific predictor to changes in hemodynamics.

Comparison of standard versus 90° rotation technique for LMA Flexible™ insertion: a randomized controlled trial.
Insertion of a flexible laryngeal mask airway (LMA Flexible) is known to be more difficult than that of a conventional laryngeal mask airway. The 90° rotation technique can improve the success rate with a conventional laryngeal mask airway but its effect with the LMA Flexible remains unknown. We assessed whether the 90° rotation technique increased the first-attempt success rate of LMA Flexible insertion versus the standard technique. ⋯ The 90° rotation technique is a good alternative to the standard technique for insertion of the LMA Flexible.
