Decreased bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) under hypoxic conditions can lead to endothelial dysfunction. NO supplementation may protect endothelial function in ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Therefore, a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was performed to verify the protective effect of NO donors on endothelium in IR injury. ⋯ The short-period use of NO donors before the onset of ischemia can protect endothelial function in IR injury.

Previous studies of the perioperative effects of general and regional anesthesia in adult patients undergoing effects of different anesthesia techniques on patients undergoing hip fracture surgery have not produced consistent results. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare the hip fracture surgery. ⋯ Regional anesthesia is associated with reduced in-hospital mortality. However, the type of anesthesia did not affect the occurrence of 30-day mortality, postoperative pneumonia, and delirium. A large number of randomized studies are needed in the future to examine the relationship between type of anesthesia, postoperative complications, and mortality.

Post-laparoscopic shoulder pain (PLSP) is a common complication following laparoscopic surgeries. This meta-analysis aimed to investigate whether pulmonary recruitment maneuver (PRM) was beneficial to alleviated shoulder pain after laparoscopic procedures. ⋯ This systematic review and meta-analysis indicate that PRM can reduce the intensity of PLSP. More studies may be needed to explore the usefulness of PRM in more laparoscopic operations besides gynecological surgeries and determine the optimal pressure of PRM or its appropriate combination with other measures. The results of this meta-analysis should be interpreted with caution owing to the high heterogeneity between the analyzed studies.

Sugammadex has been reported to lower the incidence of postoperative residual neuromuscular blockade. Despite the advantages, until recently the effects of sugammadex on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) were controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine whether reversal with sugammadex was associated with a lower risk of PPCs compared with neostigmine. ⋯ We concluded that sugammadex is more effective at reducing the incidence of PPCs including pneumonia, atelectasis, NIV and reintubation compared with neostigmine. Further evidence, preferably from RCTs, is required to confirm these findings.

The two most common methods for ultrasound-guided arterial cannulation are the long-axis in-plane (LA-IP) and short-axis out-of-plane (SA-OOP) approaches. However, it is uncertain which method is more advantageous. We conducted a meta-analysis of reported randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing the two techniques in terms of success rate, cannulation time, and complications. ⋯ The present results suggest that the SA-OOP technique is associated with a higher incidence of posterior wall puncture and hematoma than the LA-IP technique, whereas success rates are similar for the two ultrasound-guided arterial cannulation techniques. These findings should be experimentally evaluated in a more rigorous manner due to high inter-RCT heterogeneity.
