Dexmedetomidine was found to be protective against traumatic brain injury (TBI) in animal studies and safe for use in previous clinical studies, but whether it improves TBI patient survival remains to be determined. We sought to answer this question by analyzing data from the MIMIC clinical database. ⋯ Dexmedetomidine may improve the survival of TBI patients. It should be used with careful avoidance of hypotension.

Although the use of vasopressors to maintain haemodynamic goals after acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is still recommended, evidence regarding the target values and possible risks of this practice is limited, and data on haemodynamic parameters unaffected by catecholamines are rare. In this pilot study, we show the haemodynamic profile of patients with acute SCI mainly unaffected by vasopressor use and other factors that influence the cardiovascular system. ⋯ These findings could lead to an adaptation of the target range for SVRI and MAP in patients with acute SCI and therefore reduce the use of vasopressors.

Effect of postoperative ultrasound-guided internal superior laryngeal nerve block on sore throat after intubation of double-lumen bronchial tube: a randomized controlled double-blind trial.
Postoperative sore throat (POST) is one of the main adverse postoperative outcome after tracheal intubation using double-lumen endobronchial tubes (DLTs). The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness and safety of ultrasound (US)-guided block of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (iSLN) for alleviating POST after intubation of DLTs. ⋯ The use of US-guided iSLN block can be effectively and safely applied to relieve POST after intubation of DLTs on thoracic surgery.

Pupil maximum constriction velocity predicts post-induction hypotension in patients with lower ASA status: a prospective observational study.
Individuals affected by autonomic dysfunction are at a higher risk of developing hypotension following anesthesia induction. Dynamic pupillometry has previously been employed as a means of assessing autonomic function. This prospective observational study was developed to determine whether pupillary light reflex (PLR) parameters can reliably predict post-induction hypotension (PIH). ⋯ These results indicate that pupil maximum constriction velocity is a reliable predictor of post-induction hypotension in individuals of ASA I-II status undergoing elective surgery.
