Postoperative hyperglycemia is associated with morbidity and mortality in non-diabetic surgical patients. However, there is limited information on the extent and factors associated with postoperative hyperglycemia. This study assessed the magnitude and associated factors of postoperative hyperglycemia among non-diabetic adult patients who underwent elective surgery at University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia. ⋯ One-third of the study participants had postoperative hyperglycemia. Weight, ASA classification, postoperative body temperature, duration of surgery, intraoperative blood loss, and postoperative pain were identified as a modifiable risk factors. Maintaining normal body temperature throughout the procedure, treating postoperative pain, and monitoring and controlling blood glucose level in patients at risk of hyperglycemia is crucial.

Common double-lumen tube selection methods overestimate adequate tube sizes in individual patients - a 3D reconstruction study.
Appropriate selection of double-lumen tube sizes for one-lung ventilation is crucial to prevent airway damage. Current selection methods rely on demographic factors or 2D radiography. Prediction of left bronchial diameter is indispensable for choosing the adequate tube size. This prospective observational study investigates if current selection methods sufficiently predict individuals' left bronchial diameters for DLT selection compared to the 3D reconstruction. ⋯ Neither demographic nor 2D-radiographic methods sufficiently account for the variability of the bronchial diameter. Wide 95%-prediction intervals for the bronchial diameter hamper accurate individual double-lumen tube selection. This increases women's risk of bronchial damage, particularly if they have other predisposing factors. These patients may benefit from 3D reconstruction of the left main bronchus.

Safety of propofol-assisted deep extubation in the dental treatment of children-a retrospective, observational study.
Awake extubation and deep extubation are commonly used anesthesia techniques. In this study, the safety of propofol-assisted deep extubation in the dental treatment of children was assessed. ⋯ Propofol-assisted deep extubation is a suitable technique that can be used for pediatric patients who exhibited non-cooperation in the outpatient setting. Epistaxis represents the most frequently encountered complication. Preoperative upper respiratory tract infection significantly increases the risk of complications. The occurrence of EA was notably lower than reported in other studies.

0.75% ropivacaine may be a suitable drug in pregnant women undergoing urgent cesarean delivery during labor analgesia period.
3% chloroprocaine (CP) has been reported as the common local anesthetic used in pregnant women undergoing urgent cesarean delivery during labor analgesia period. However, 0.75% ropivacaine is considered a promising and effective alternative. Therefore, we conducted a randomized controlled trial to compare the effectiveness and safety of 0.75% ropivacaine with 3% chloroprocaine for extended epidural anesthesia in pregnant women. ⋯ The registration number: ChiCTR2200065201; http://www.chictr.org.cn , Principal investigator: MEN, Date of registration: 31/10/2022.

Comparison of the effect of two recruitment manoeuvres to conventional ventilation on lung atelectasis in paediatric laparoscopic surgery- a prospective randomised controlled trial.
There is a high incidence of pulmonary atelectasis during paediatric laparoscopic surgeries. The authors hypothesised that utilising a recruitment manoeuvre or using continuous positive airway pressure may prevent atelectasis compared to conventional ventilation. ⋯ Application of a recruitment manoeuvre post-intubation or CPAP during induction and maintenance with a high PEEP leads to less atelectasis than conventional ventilation during laparoscopic surgery in paediatric patients.
