Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEffects of propofol, desflurane, and sevoflurane on respiratory functions following endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery: a prospective randomized study.
General anesthesia with intravenous or inhalation anesthetics reduces respiratory functions. We investigated the effects of propofol, desflurane, and sevoflurane on postoperative respiratory function tests. ⋯ We demonstrated that propofol, desflurane, and sevoflurane reduced FEV1 and FVC values postoperatively, without any significant differences among the drugs.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyUltrasound-guided greater occipital nerve block with botulinum toxin for patients with chronic headache in the occipital area: a randomized controlled trial.
Ultrasound-guided greater occipital nerve (GON) block has been frequently used to treat various types of headaches, and botulinum toxin has recently begun to be used in patients with headache. Our study presents the long-term effect of botulinum toxin on GON block using ultrasound in patients with chronic headache in occipital area. ⋯ Ultrasound-guided GON block using BTX is effective in reducing short-term and long-term pain in patients with chronic headache in the occipital area.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyProgrammed intermittent epidural bolus (PIEB) as compared to continuous epidural infusion (CEI) for the maintenance of labor analgesia: A prospective randomized single blinded controlled trial.
Programmed intermittent epidural bolus (PIEB) techniques are a new area of interest for maintaining labor analgesia due to the potential to decrease motor block and improve labor analgesia. This study compares continuous epidural infusion (CEI) to 2 PIEB regimens for labor analgesia. ⋯ Our study suggests that high volume PIEB regimens for labor analgesia decrease breakthrough pain and physician-administered boluses.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of addition of perineural buprenorphine or dexamethasone to levobupivacaine on postoperative analgesia in ultrasound guided transversus abdominis plane block in patients undergoing unilateral inguinal hernia repair: a prospective randomized double blind controlled trial.
The transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block is an effective technique to block the thoracolumbar nerves innervating the anterolateral abdominal wall. This study was conducted to evaluate the analgesic efficacy and opioid consumption with the use of perineural buprenorphine or dexamethasone in TAP blocks after unilateral inguinal hernioplasties. ⋯ Levobupivacaine with perineural buprenorphine in a TAP block after unilateral open inguinal hernioplasty facilitates prolonged analgesia and reduced requirement for rescue analgesics compared to perineural dexamethasone, without significant side effects.

Randomized Controlled TrialThree minutes propofol after sevoflurane anesthesia to prevent emergence agitation following inguinal hernia repair in children: a randomized controlled trial.
Emergence agitation (EA) is a common problem after sevoflurane anesthesia among children. There have been mixed results with control of EA using propofol 1 mg/kg bolus following sevoflurane anesthesia. An infusion of 3 mg/kg of propofol over 3 min following sevoflurane anesthesia has been found to be promising in children undergoing magnetic resonance imaging scans. However, no studies have been conducted during surgical procedures. We aimed to examine the efficacy of transition to propofol for 3 min after cessation of sevoflurane anesthesia in children undergoing inguinal hernia repair. ⋯ Transition to propofol 3 mg/kg over 3 min following sevoflurane anesthesia reduces the incidence of EA and improves the quality of emergence. Although emergence times were longer, the duration of stay in the PACU was similar with propofol use.
