Retirement provides many opportunities for physicians in this stage of their lives. This final installment of the three-part series on retirement discusses the post-retirement options that physicians can avail themselves of when they leave the conventional practice of medicine. We will also provide a checklist for the retiring doctor.

Operative sterility is a critical factor with regard to infection in the postoperative period. In recent years, techniques and devices have been developed to reduce the potential for exposure to pathogens. ⋯ The SteriCup provides a designated sterile area to store suction catheters and removed endotracheal tubes and allows for their simple and safe disposal. Devices such as the SteriCup have the potential to improve operating room systems and minimize potential for operative infection.

The operating room (OR) turnover is a critical period in patient care and OR management. Turnover time (TOT) is a traditional quantitative measure of OR efficiency but is lacking when used to describe the TOT process. ⋯ Interview data of OR staff can supplement quantitative efficiency measures and identify areas of opportunity in OR management and patient safety.

The recognition of specialty boards started with the National Board of Medical Examiners and eventually gave rise to the Liaison Committee for Specialty Boards. The most appealing feature of any organization is its ability to provide quality of care. ⋯ The standardization of healthcare is more evident now with healthcare reform underway, and with changes in the system. A physician's services need to be acceptable, and certification is a step in assuring that a standard of care is being met.

The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 solidifies healthcare payment reform by signaling the death of traditional fee-for-service reimbursement for providers. Effective 2019, Medicare payments will rely heavily on data, risk-sharing, and transparency to advance value over volume. Other payers will follow.
