PKCγ-positive neurons gate light tactile inputs to pain pathway through pERK1/2 neuronal network in trigeminal neuropathic pain model.
To explore the possible relationship between protein kinase C gamma (PKCγ) and phosphorylated forms of extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (pERK1/2) in the rat medullary dorsal horn and the facial hypersensitivity indicative of dynamic mechanical allodynia (DMA) following chronic constriction of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-IoN). ⋯ PKCγ cells in the medullary dorsal horn may be involved in DMA following CCI-IoN through the activation of pERK1/2-expressing cells, which then may relay non-nociceptive information to lamina I cells in the medullary dorsal horn.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyIntramuscular temperature modulates glutamate-evoked masseter muscle pain intensity in humans.
To determine whether glutamate-evoked jaw muscle pain is altered by the temperature of the solution injected. ⋯ Glutamate-evoked jaw muscle pain was significantly altered by the temperature of the injection solution. Although temperature perception in the jaw muscle is poor, pain intensity is increased when the muscle tissue temperature is elevated.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialMyofascial pain: an open study on the pharmacotherapeutic response to stepped treatment with tricyclic antidepressants and gabapentin.
To evaluate, in an open trial, the pharmacotherapeutic efficacy of tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) drugs and gabapentin in patients with persistent myofascial pain and to identify patient and pain characteristics that may predict treatment outcome. ⋯ This study has demonstrated the good pharmacotherapeutic response of persistent myofascial pain, even in more severe cases. Not being a randomized controlled trial, the results may be biased and should be interpreted with caution. Patients who do not respond to TCAs may be a distinct subgroup and this needs further investigation. The results also suggest that gabapentin, at a lower dose than previously reported, is a good alternative in TCA-resistant patients.

Comparative StudyAmplified Brain Processing of Dentoalveolar Pressure Stimulus in Persistent Dentoalveolar Pain Disorder Patients.
(1) To determine the brain regions activated by dentoalveolar pressure stimulation in persistent dentoalveolar pain disorder (PDAP) patients, and (2) to compare these activation patterns to those seen in pain-free control subjects. ⋯ The present results suggest that dentoalveolar pressure is processed differently in the brain of PDAP patients, and the increased activation in several brain areas is consistent with amplified pain processing.
