The Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) Programme, which was implemented by the NHS in 2009, gives prominence to patients' views about their health. Self-reported measures of health are now being sought from all patients before and after four elective procedures--hip and knee replacement surgery, hernia repair and varicose veins surgery. ⋯ The information will be used to identify and reward good performance by providers; help patients to make choices and clinicians to monitor and improve quality; and inform commissioners' decisions about which services to prioritise. The aim of this article is to inform nurses about PROMs and encourage them to engage with it.

This article explores the role of ketamine in pain management. Ketamine is an analgesic used to treat uncontrolled acute and procedural pain. It has protective properties and can prevent patients from developing persistent pain. In sub-anaesthetic analgesic doses, ketamine is a safe drug and produces minimal side effects.

Procedural pain in adults is not well documented in the literature. This article provides practical advice for healthcare professionals on how to assess and manage pain in these patients. ⋯ Fast-acting and short-acting analgesics may provide the most convenient method of managing procedural pain. The possible presence of different types of pain, such as chronic and neuropathic pain, may need to be addressed when managing procedural pain in adults.
