Physiotherapy education and training prior to upper abdominal surgery is memorable and has high treatment fidelity: a nested mixed-methods randomised-controlled study.
To (1) assess memorability and treatment fidelity of pre-operative physiotherapy education prior to elective upper abdominal surgery and, (2) to explore patient opinions on pre-operative education. ⋯ Face-to-face pre-operative physiotherapy education and training prior to upper abdominal surgery is memorable and has high treatment fidelity.

Effectiveness of a combined exercise training and home-based walking programme on physical activity compared with standard medical care in moderate COPD: a randomised controlled trial.
To estimate the effectiveness of a 10-week combined exercise training and home-based walking programme on daily physical activity (PA) compared with standard medical care in patients with moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ⋯ A combined exercise training and home-based walking programme in primary care physiotherapy improved PA in patients with moderate COPD. Clinical trial registration number NL24766.018.08.

Exercise interventions need to be assessed qualitatively to establish how people participate in and perceive the intervention and how interventions should be delivered for maximal effect. ⋯ Exercise interventions targeting frail older adults in the acute setting may benefit from taking a multifaceted approach to implementation. Education tailored to the participants, and setting restorative goals, may improve outcome expectations and future intention to exercise. The relationship between the participants and those implementing an intervention appears critical to their participation and whether they value the programme.

To investigate inter-rater reliability of a set of shoulder measurements including inclinometry [shoulder range of motion (ROM)], acromion-table distance and pectoralis minor muscle length (static scapular positioning), upward rotation with two inclinometers (scapular kinematics) and pain pressure thresholds (muscle tenderness) in middle-aged women. ⋯ In a battery of clinical tools to evaluate factors contributing to shoulder pain, static scapular positioning and pressure pain thresholds were found to have good to excellent inter-rater reliability in middle-aged women. Additional training is recommended for measurements with a gravity inclinometer.

Biopsychosocial interventions provided in multidisciplinary settings are promising for improving functional disability levels in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). These multidisciplinary biopsychosocial interventions mainly focus on cognitive-behavioural approaches that aim to change negative cognitions, emotions, behaviour, work and social factors. ⋯ This paper will provide a detailed description of the development and content of the biopsychosocial primary care intervention 'Back on Track' for this specific subgroup of patients. The Back on Track intervention was developed based on available scientific evidence and clinical experience from multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation programmes, and its effectiveness is currently being tested.
