Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffect of epidural analgesia on colorectal anastomotic healing and colonic motility.
To examine the effect of epidural local anesthetic and narcotic agents on colonic anastomotic healing. ⋯ These findings suggest in this model that postoperative epidural analgesia is a safe technique after colorectal resection and anastomosis.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialComparison of sufentanil, bupivacaine, and their combination for epidural analgesia in obstetrics.
We postulated that epidural sufentanil alone would provide adequate analgesia for labor and delivery. We also considered the possibility that a combination of epidural sufentanil and bupivacaine would demonstrate superior analgesia and fewer side effects when compared with either agent alone. ⋯ Epidural sufentanil alone does not reliably provide satisfactory analgesia for labor and delivery. Addition of small amounts of local anesthetic to bolus doses of sufentanil enhances and prolongs the analgesic effect.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialPostoperative epidural morphine, but not epidural bupivacaine, delays gastric emptying on the first day after cholecystectomy.
Gastric emptying is delayed during the first days after abdominal surgery. Studies with volunteers have shown that epidural morphine delays gastric emptying but epidural analgesia with bupivacaine does not. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether these differences in healthy volunteers are also found after cholecystectomy when epidural morphine or epidural bupivacaine is used for postoperative pain relief. ⋯ Postoperative gastric emptying was significantly delayed after epidural analgesia with morphine compared to thoracic epidural bupivacaine. Compared to the control situation, epidural bupivacaine did not influence gastric emptying.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffect of subarachnoid morphine on the incidence of spinal headache.
The addition of fentanyl to hyperbaric local anesthetics has been shown to reduce the incidence of post dural puncture headache in the obstetric patient. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of subarachnoid morphine on the incidence of headache. ⋯ It is concluded from our study that subarachnoid morphine did not decrease the incidence of post dural puncture headache in the obstetric patient.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialAn evaluation of epidural bupivacaine with and without meperidine in labor.
One aim of epidural analgesia during childbirth is to provide satisfactory pain relief with minimal side effects. We hypothesized that a combination of opioid and local anesthetic would better achieve this aim than either drug alone. This study compared the efficacy and side effects of epidural meperidine and bupivacaine combined to those of meperidine and bupivacaine alone. ⋯ The low-dose combination of meperidine and bupivacaine used in this trial proved a satisfactory preparation for epidural administration during the early stages of labor.
