[The results of ulnar nerve decompression in Guyon's canal syndrome].
The aim of the study was to evaluate a group of patients treated for Guyon's canal syndrome with analysis of the cause for and outcome of surgery. ⋯ Syndrome of Guyon's canal can easily be treated by surgery. As in other compression syndromes, the sooner a surgical decompression is performed, the better outcomes are achieved.

[Evolution of the technique of arthroscopic reinsertion of the rotator cuff. Our experience from the years 1998 to 2008].
A rotator cuff tear is a relatively frequent cause of pain and restricted motion of the shoulder. Some orthopaedists believe that any attempt at rotator cuff reconstruction will fail. The aim of this paper is to present our experience with arthroscopic reconstruction of rotator cuff tears. ⋯ The arthroscopic reconstruction of a rotator cuff tears results in a marked relief of pain and improved joint function. An ideal candidate for this treatment should show passive free motion at the shoulder joint, no clinical signs of bursitis, and mobilisable tendon stumps of the torn rotator cuff. In addition, these patients should be highly motivated for post-operative rehabilitation. A suture device was most effective in rotator cuff repair. For good fixation into the bone it is recommended to use special implants that have a minimal risk of dislodgement or anchor thread failure.

[Surgical treatment for atlantoaxial osteoarthritis (AAOA): a prospective study of twenty-seven patients].
Atlantoaxial osteoarthritis (AAOA) is a clinical syndrome with signs distinctly different from those of degenerative sub - axial spine disease. Its diagnosis may long be delayed, partly because of insufficient knowledge and partly due to difficulties in interpreting both anteroposterior and lateral radiographs. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the first 27 AAOA patients treated at our department. ⋯ Patients with painful osteoarthritis refractory to conservative treatment will benefit from atlantoaxial fixation and fusion. For the patient, restricted cervical rotation is acceptable in return for pain relief. From the surgical point of view, the risk of complications associated with the operative technique did not exceed a tolerable rate.

The aim of the study was to define the principal and additional characteristics of critical burns and to evaluate the effect of an increasing Abbreviated Burn Severity Index (ABSI) on mortality in burn patients admitted to the Department of Burns and Reconstructive Surgery, University Hospital in Brno. ⋯ The most important epidemiological data on patients with critical burns were evaluated. The study shows that although the number of patients annually admitted to hospital with severe burns is still high, it has nevertheless decreased recently.

Motion-preservation technologies for spinal disorders have evolved and come into use in the last decade. Three principal systems are currently available: total disc replacement, posterior neutralisation transpedicular system and interspinous implants. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate our group of lumbar total disc replacements at a follow-up of 2 years. ⋯ Based on the results it can be concluded that total disc replacement is an efficient method of treating degenerative intervertebral disc disease of the lumbar spine in young, active and motivated patients with no posterior spinal structure degeneration.
