[Epidemiological Study of the Effects of Gender, Age, Mobility and Time of Injury on Proximal Femoral Fractures].
PURPOSE OF STUDY Based on the selected criteria the study presents the evaluation of data of patients who underwent a surgery for proximal femoral fracture at the Department of Orthopaedic Trauma of the 1 st Faculty of Medicine and Military University Hospital Prague in the period 2013-2016. The paper aimed to determine whether there are any differences in proximal femoral fractures depending on the selected criteria. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study comprised 805 patients (562 women and 243 men) older than 21 years with proximal femoral fractures who were treated between January 1, 2013 and December 31, 2016. ⋯ The highest number of proximal femoral fractures was reported in the period from October to January, the lowest in the period from June to July. The knowledge of these seasonal variations can help plan the health care in the medical facility concerned. Key words: proximal femur, fracture, gender, mobility, day-time, seasonality.

[Suprapatellar Nailing of Tibial Fractures - Evaluation of Clinical and Radiological Results].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The locked nailing of diaphyseal fractures of the tibia currently represents a method of choice for treating the closed diaphyseal fractures, some of the tibial metaphyseal fractures and open tibial diaphyseal fractures classified as grade I and II according to Gustilo-Anderson (GA) classification. The suprapatellar (SP) approach is an alternative technique of insertion of the nail in semi-extension of the lower extremity with easier reduction, namely of multiple fractures and proximal diaphyseal fractures of the tibia in particular. This study aims to evaluate the group of patients in whom the suprapatellar approach was used and who were followed up for the period of at least 12 months. ⋯ The functional results of the knee joint are comparable to those achieved with the infrapatellar nailing technique. The final LS score correlates with the age of the patients. Key words:tibial fractures, suprapatellar approach, intramedullary nailing, knee pain.

[Local Application of Tranexamic Acid in Total Hip Arthroplasty Decreases Blood Loss and Consumption of Blood Transfusion].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The primary aim of our study was to identify the effects of local application of tranexamic acid (TXA, Exacyl) on the amount of postoperative blood loss and blood transfusion requirement in primary total hip arthroplasty. We also recorded the levels of postoperative haemoglobin and its drop in early period after surgery. In each patient, we monitored in detail the incidence of early complications (haematoma, wound exudate). ⋯ No significant complications were observed in the patients with TXA. According to the recent literature, it is therefore appropriate to include the local application of TXA among the recommended procedures for THA, as is the case in total knee arthroplasty. Key words: tranexamic acid, local application, blood loss, hidden blood loss, THA, total hip arthroplasty, complications.

[Evaluation of Efficacy of Systemic Administration of Tranexamic Acid (Exacyl) in Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty - Prospective Cohort Study].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY To evaluate the efficacy of the systemic administration of two doses of tranexamic acid (TXA) in total knee (TKA) and hip arthroplasty (THA). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study evaluated a total of 295 patients who underwent total knee and hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis, prospectively followed up were the patients who had been administered the tranexamic acid (TXA), and this group was subsequently compared against the cohort - control group. Our evaluation was focused on perioperative and postoperative period. ⋯ A. S.) ceased to be used in knee replacement surgery. Key words:total hip arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty, tranexamic acid, blood loss, allogeneic transfusion, autotransfusion, postoperative complications.

[Osteotomy after Distal Radius Fractures - Five-Year Clinical and Radiological Outcomes].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The purpose of our retrospective study is to evaluate 5-year functional and radiological outcomes in patients following corrective osteotomy of the distal radius and ulnar osteotomy for malposition after a distal radius fracture, to identify differences in the outcomes of corrective osteotomies depending on the type of the original fracture according to the AO classification, the grade of arthritis of radiocarpal (RC) joint, surgical approach and the way of stabilisation of the osteotomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS The followed-up group of 22 patients (8 men and 14 women) underwent osteotomy for malposition of distal radius in the period 2007-2011. The age of patients in the followed-up group ranged from 21 to 72 years, with the mean age of 51 years at the time of surgery. ⋯ Our results have proven better functional outcomes of deformity correction achieved by osteotomy in case of grade 1 and 2 arthritis than by the limited wrist arthrodesis. In patients showing arthritic changes, no progression was reported within five years after the osteotomy. Key words: distal radius fracture, distal radius deformity, osteotomy, functional results.
