Review[Intestinal intussusception in children: truly a classic triad?].
Intussusception in children is not a frequent pathology but it is important to consider when working in a paediatric emergency department due to the potential serious complications in the case that the diagnosis is not rapidly identified. The majority of cases are idiopathic and in only 10% of patients will a pathological lead point be found. ⋯ Hence, the diagnosis of intussusception should be suspected in all children, under the age of 3 years, with acute colicky abdominal pain. In this practical review, we have included the clinical experience in intussusception seen in 2 Swiss university paediatric hospitals.

Review[Pathophysiological mechanisms of organ dysfunction in sepsis].
Sepsis is defined as the systemic inflammatory response to an infection. The occurrence of organ dysfunction increases the severity of sepsis. ⋯ Although septic organ dysfunction has long been considered as the end result of chaotic, uncontrolled and deregulated inflammatory cascades, it might instead represent an adaptive response to avoid the occurrence of irreversible tissue damage and end-organ injury. In this article, we review the major mechanisms involved in organ dysfunction during sepsis, and also present the concept of organ dysfunction as an adaptive response to the septic process.

Review[Role of C-reactive protein in the diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of community-acquired pneumonia].
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a major clinical problem in terms of morbidity, mortality, and use of hospital resources. It is well recognized that a delay in making the diagnosis and instituting appropriate antibiotic treatment is associated with an increased mortality. ⋯ But its usefulness is not known. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the usefulness of CRP in the diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of CAP.

Review[What is new in the medical management of acute heart failure?].
Acute heart failure (AHF) is a frequent medical condition associated with a poor prognosis. Based on systolic blood pressure at presentation, patients with AHF can be classified into 5 clinical profiles enabling a more targeted use of standard medications including diuretics, vasodilators and inotropes. The most recent guidelines underline the importance of a rapid management and the favorable impact of heart failure programs, which reduce morbidity and mortality after an admission for AHF. New therapeutic perspectives include ultrafiltration, vasopressin and adenosine antagonists, relaxin and new inotropes such as istaroxime.
