To review the general clinical utility of the first dedicated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) unit enabling upright, weight-bearing positional evaluation of the spinal column (pMRI) during various dynamic-kinetic maneuvers (kMRI) in patients with degenerative conditions of the spine. ⋯ To conclude, the potential relative beneficial aspects of upright, weight-bearing (pMRI), dynamic-kinetic (kMRI) spinal imaging on this system over that of recumbent MRI (rMRI) include: the revelation of occult disease dependent on true axial loading, the unmasking of kinetic-dependent disease, and the ability to scan the patient in the position of clinically relevant signs and symptoms. This imaging unit also demonstrated low claustrophobic potential and yielded relatively high-resolution images with little motion/chemical shift artifact.

The value of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis and detection of complications in patients with chronic pancreatitis are reviewed. CT and MRI diagnoses are based on changes in the pancreatic duct and parenchyma and on the detection of ductal calculi. Despite technical refinements of these imaging methods, the diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis remains often difficult because of the complexity of the morphologic changes and the false-negative results in the early stages of the disease. This article describes and illustrates the imaging features of chronic pancreatitis classified according to the underlying etiology.

A direct frontal upper abdominal impact and a bicycle fall in a child are classical mechanisms of blunt pancreatic injury. Clinical symptoms are not characteristic. Serum amylase level is frequently normal at admission and peritoneal lavage fluid amylase is not diagnostic. ⋯ Both modalities are unable to detect pancreatic duct rupture. As ERP cannot be performed in all trauma patients, only patients with minor pancreatic injury can be enrolled in a conservative management without surgical revision. The role of multislice CT at admission and MRP has to be investigated to increase diagnostic efficiency in pancreatic duct injury.

Emergency medicine has emerged as a specific medical specialty for 30 years. To be efficient, the emergency clinician frequently needs the contribution of radiological examinations. This is the reason why emergency radiology has emerged as a new radiologic subspecialty. The aim of this paper is to review the recent history of emergency medicine and to summarize the present state of the radiological organisation for emergency care in the Western countries.
